Using the Tips for Identifying Themes/Ideas handout in our Files page in the file titled First Two Weeks to guide you, fill it out the chart with the story that you would like to write about. It’s okay if you end up changing your mind, but remember that you will have to fill out an theme/idea chart for the story that you do eventually write about for Timed Essay #1.

1) In the first column, write down a theme/idea

2) In the second column, write down textual evidence or a quote that supports the theme/idea you identified in the first column.

3) In the third column, write down your thoughts/opinions about the quote and how it relates to the theme/idea you identified in the first column
