•Who is Carl Dahlhaus, and what persistent myth did he perpetuate in his writings?

•What part did German philosophical idealism, which “flourished in the 19^th century simultaneously with the rise of the (mostly Germanic) musical canon,” play in the creation of the “virtually all-white, all-male” canon of classical music?

•What does Shreffler mean when she writes that the musical canon has historically “[privileged] specific cultural notions of masculinity in the guise of gender neutrality?”

•Summarize the main reason why, according to Shreffler, women specifically have been left out of the canon of classical music.

•Using specific examples from previously assigned course readings (such as readings by Broyles, DeNora, and Lockwood), explain why Shreffler chose to use Beethoven as a central example in her blog post. Consider how Beethoven and the “Beethoven myth” that we’ve been reading about all semester relate to the “myth of the canon’s invisible hand.” Do not critique Shreffler’s argument in your answer; focus on answering the question clearly and with good examples.
