The ability to speak multiple languages is something fascinating and when it comes to infants learning multiple languages, there is positives and negatives. In research conducted by Byers-Heinlein, Fennell, and Werker (2013), they looked at how monolingual and bilingual infants can associate words with objects, and from there work, we can see positives and negatives to infants learning multiple languages.

First off, Byers-Heinlein et al. (2013) measurement of how well infants (12-14 months of age) associate words with objects, whether they are bilingual or monolingual showed us that whether the infant is able to speak multiple languages or not, they were successful in the association. However, in the study, the work was conducted in a lab setting, so environmental factors could not be accounted for. These factors may be how families speak with each other at home (dominant language) versus how care takers may speak with the child, if applicable, and how the presentation of language is given to the children. We must also consider how phonetics can alter the way bilingual infants associate a word with an object, so that means do certain words in both languages possibly sound the same that associate with the same object as well as different sounding words that associate with the same object, and vice versa for both scenarios (Byers-Heinlein et al., 2013). For the most part, the data showed that word association for both monolingual and bilingual develops at about the same pace, but the limitations for the study are as stated in the prior sentence, but future studies can measure this development in a more complex manner by incorporating those multiple factors (Byers-Heinlein et al., 2013).

In addition to the information provided, in my opinion and from personal experience, I believe learning multiple languages at an early age is very beneficial and it is something that can only help you as you get older. As we get older it is a lot tougher to learn new languages, so being able to learn at an early age where the brain fosters that learning and growth is very beneficial. However, learning multiple languages is tough because your brain switches between two languages when going through tasks and Byers-Heinlein et al. (2013) states this about the phonetics of working with multiple languages, “When required to learn phonetically similar words, bilinguals face a different kind of challenge than do monolinguals because only bilinguals have to keep track of two different phonetic environments.” Although challenges will arise with learning multiple languages, I believe it is very beneficial and is something I would want for my children.
