Option 1 – Feudalism Mini-historiography
In addition to Elizabeth Brown’s “Tyranny of a Construct” essay (which everyone will read), read the following excerpts from Susan Reynolds’ Fiefs and Vassals, and Thomas Bisson’s 1995 Medieval Academy of America presidential address (published in Speculum). Then construct a brief 4-5 page historiographic essay which outlines the major issues in the late 20th-century debate over the concept of “feudalism.” Standard formatting conventions apply, though you should footnote these sources following Chicago style rather than using parenthetical citation. NO DOUBLE SPACING BETWEEN FOOTNOTES. For an example of a historiographic essay, see this essay on the Fourth Crusade (my favorite crusade) and the description of a historiographic essay below. All three articles also contain historiographic components themselves. Don’t try to copy exactly the Fourth Crusade article, but see how it’s structured, what kinds of things it addresses, and how it approaches the topic of scholarly debate (you’ve already done something similar with primary sources in your analysis of the lives of Charlemagne and Alfred).
