Example 1:

The story in Wisdom Walk that teaches me about Christianity and the wisdom practice is, “Holiday Reprieve.” In Christianity, one of the key concepts is known as forgiveness. In Christianity, Jesus claimed the possibilities of forgiving even during the hardest times. In this story, Professor Bennet, known as the little girl, stole change from her mother’s purse in order to purchase candy. Soon, it became a week of going through her mother’s purse while she was sleeping. However, soon enough her mother confronted her, and stated for her to wait until her father comes home so she can receive what she thought would be her punishment. Her father came home, and the little girl overheard her mother claim to him, “…she deserves to be punished” (Wisdom Walk 82). The girl hurried to her bedroom, thinking about the consequences of her actions and trying to think of the possible ways her parents would punish her for what she had done. Finally, her father entered her bedroom as she was crying over the thoughts of what she believed her punishments could be. She confessed what she had done, and although she did not understand why she did it, she understood it was wrong to steal from her mother. As her father was listening to her, he stated, “What you did was wrong, and I want you to apologize to your mother. But I’m not going to punish you. It’s the holidays – a time for love and forgiveness.” The little girl felt her shame for engaging in the wrong act go away due to her fathers kindness, and felt like she was given a gift. She felt her fathers love even though she knows what she did was wrong. She claimed, “I could make a mistake, be forgiven, and start again with a clean slate” (Wisdom Walk 83). After this, she never stole money from her mother again. After reading this story, I understand and have learned that forgiving someone is truly a powerful act, specifically when it comes to someone we are so close to, in this case the little girls father.

Personally, my views about the story are positive. Although the little girls acts of stealing from her mother were wrong, her father still forgave her unjust actions. This story taught me the power of forgiveness, and how much being forgiven, forgiving someone, and ourselves, and moving on from ones mistakes can really impact an individual. This story relates to my life because when I was 16 I finally got my license. My father kindly asked me not to use his car, but I did not listen to him. When he was sleeping at night, I stole his car keys and decided to go on a joy ride by myself. Unfortunately, I crashed the car and it became totaled. I did not know what to do, so I called my mom and she quickly came and we called the police in order for the car to be impounded. I was unable to sleep the entire night, as I kept thinking of the consequences and punishments that will result the following morning due to my wrong actions. The next morning, my dad was looking for his car keys, and I confessed to him what had happened the night before. Opposed to my father being furious and mad that I stole his car, and it resulted into an accident, he forgave me and told me that he doesn’t care about the vehicle and only cares about my safety. He asked me how I was feeling and forgave me instantly. Although I was aware I had made a mistake, my fathers forgiveness made me realize like the girl in the story that, “I could make a mistake, be forgiven, and start again with a clean slate” (Wisdom Walk 83). Ever since that day, I always ask (instead of stealing) my parents if I could borrow their cars, and I have and never will steal any of their keys again. It really just comes to show how powerful, impactful, and effective the act of forgiving someone really is, and how forgiving someone involves a choice that resides in our power.

Example 2:

I’ve chosen to talk about the story Holiday Reprieve in wisdom walk. The story starts off with the narrator confessing that she used to steal money from her mother’s purse, so she could buy candy for herself on her way to school. However, she gets caught and confronted by her mother after a week of sneaking into her purse. The mother threatens her that there would be some kind of punishment for her when her father returns home from work. The narrator feels ashamed and regrets what she’s done, and is thinking about the kind of punishments that are awaiting her. As soon as her father comes home, the girl breaks into tears as a sign of regret, thinking if she could be forgiven and given a second chance. The father goes to the narrator and tries to calm her down. She assures her that she wouldn’t get punished, especially during the holiday season. However, he reminded her that what she did was wrong and she had to apologize to her mother. All of a sudden the girl felt loved and cared for again, despite her wrongdoing. She felt blessed to be forgotten, and be given a second chance for a fresh start. At the end, she explained how her fathers approach resulted in her from never taking money from her mother’s purse again.

The story Holiday Reprieve tells us more about Christianity, and reminds us to forgive ourselves and others. The story explains how forgiveness “frees us from the burden of hostility or resentment that we carry within our own heart”(84). Moreover, not only forgiving will make us feel more free, but it allows us to let go of all the anger and resentment. Forgiving others isn’t a sign of weakness, and it doesn’t mean we allow and accept other’s unacceptable behavior, but we’re to remind them of their wrongdoing, and give them a second chance. The narrator in the story is a great example of how giving people a second chance results in them not committing the same mistake, and become a better member of the society.
