What about him?

For your followup question, let me call your attention to the deeply “nested” structure of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. The story is told in the form of letters written by Robert Walton to his sister Margaret Saville. In those letters, Walton tells Margaret what he heard from Victor, and Victor in turn tells us what he heard the monster tell him. In the heart of the novel—the part that is narrated by the monster himself—we have a kind of triple hearsay: Margaret is sharing letters in which Walton is telling us what Victor told Walton the monster told Victor.

Why is this important? Well, for one thing, it compounds the problem of the unreliable narrator. Instead of the usual possibility, that a story’s narrator might be giving us something less than the unvarnished truth, there are multiple points at which a narrator might be unreliable. Maybe Walton is telling the truth about what Victor told Walton, but Victor lied to Walton. Or maybe both Walton and Victor are telling the truth, but the monster lied to Victor.

You get the picture—the more narrators involved, the greater the problem of unreliable narration.

Anyway, most psychoanalytic analyses of Frankenstein focus on either Victor Frankenstein or Mary Shelley. Victor’s desire for his beautiful step-sister is incestuous, so he has to repress it, or Mary Shelley feels guilty because her birth led to the death of her mother, yada yada yada.

But what about Robert Walton? Is there any reason to think he might have psychological issues of his own? What might psychoanalysis suggest to us about, for example, his ambition to reach the North Pole, and his failure to achieve that goal?
