Unit 8 Paper

The Workplace: 1960 to Present

For this Assignment, you will consider the impact of the second and third waves of feminism on the workplace. You will complete either Option A (employment legislation and personal experience) or Option B (interview a coworker, family member, or friend, and assess the modern workplace). You will share your workplace experiences and/or those of a family member, coworker, or friend, in combination with connections to the Unit 8 Reading. The goal of this Assignment is to determine how individual experiences in the workplace reflect the challenges and successes of the second and third waves of feminism between 1963 and present.

Select either Option A or Option B, and complete both parts (Parts I and II) for either option.

Option A: Employment Legislation and Personal Experience

Part I A. Consider employment legislation such as the 1964 Civil Rights Act, Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, or other employment legislation between 1963 and present. Select two pieces of legislation which have impacted women’s roles in the workforce. Describe both pieces of legislation, as well as their impact on pay equity, opportunities for women in the workforce, the concept of the glass ceiling, and so on. Include connections to the Unit 8 Dubois and Dumenil reading material to support your points.

Part II A. Address your own experiences in the workforce. Have you experienced or witnessed any type of discrimination, harassment, or pay inequity in your job or career? What has been the impact of employment legislation, in your perspective, on the workplace between 1963 and present? Address why learning about the history of women’s experiences in the workforce is useful.

Option B: The Perspective of a Colleague or Family Member/Friend

Part I B. Select a female coworker, family member, friend, neighbor, or a total stranger, who is currently employed, and interview that individual about her experiences in the workplace. Ask your interview subject a minimum of six questions about her experiences in her job/career, and include the six interview questions and the responses received as part of your Assignment for Option B. For example, you may wish to ask questions related to your interview subject’s career history, impressions of upward mobility, or pay scales.

Part II B. Address the experiences of your interview subject in the workforce, and compare those to your own. How are your experiences different from, or similar to, those of your interview subject? What has been the impact of employment legislation, in your perspective, on the workplace between 1963 and present? Address why learning about the history of women’s experiences in the workforce is useful.
