Topic: Choose a segment of writing by Aristotle and show how it applies to the challenge of technology in our time OR choose a segment of writing by Descartes and show how it applies to current debate about climate change.

Length: 3-5 pages

Format: Place the segment at the top of the first page beneath the title. Follow our guidelines for textual analysis (located in the Writing Modules of this course). Broadly your paper will be divided in two parts. In the first part, you will isolate and explain three themes in a philosophical text; in the second part, you will show how these philosophical tools apply to a very precise aspect of technology or globalization.

Use at least 2 sources beyond our course materials.

Use at least two images—maps, charts, and tables.

Grading Rubric for the Final Project and Short Paper

• An “A” essay meets all of these requirements:
  • essay presents a fully developed application of the theory to the issue at hand and is in the neighborhood of the length requirements, and the answer is complete—length alone is not enough
  • essay presents a clearly developed application of the theory (ideas are expressed without vagueness or ambiguity)
  • essay demonstrates the student’s understanding of the concepts without over­reliance on quotation, paraphrase, or summary (and where asked for, the student’s own view is expressed)
  • essay is complete (answers all parts of the question)
  • No more than one grammatical error for every 100 words and is correctly formatted (1” margins, double­spaced, 12 point type, black ink or font color) and properly uses citations and bibliographies in accordance with the style used by the student.
• A “B” essay meets only four of the above requirements and meets the length requirement A “C” essay meets only three of the above
  requirements
• A “D” essay meets only two of the above requirements
• An “F” essay fully meets one or none of the above requirements
