750 – 1000 words
Locate some technology, such as an application, mobile technology, or non-software based technology. Do research on how that technology has had a social impact on a culture or group of people outside of the US, regardless of where it was first designed and developed.
The main questions to consider are the following: How did the mobile technology or application disrupt a traditional market? Was the disruption positive or negative? Who was it positive for? Who was it negative for? How was the industry run prior to disruption? How exactly was the industry disrupted? Was the industry disrupted before, if so how? Who has access to it now, given that it has been disrupted through the technology? Who is displaced by the disruption? Who is given priority of use through the technology? Who really benefits from the disruption of the industry? The consumer? The disrupter? Both? What laws might the disrupter be attempting to get around through the use of technology? Finally offer your own judgment on the question: does the technology perform an ethical function? Defend your answer by taking into consideration ethical perspectives and the issue of fairness. The write up should contain a description of the technology, a socio-economic-cultural analysis of the technology, and a central argument for your judgment on the ethical status of the technology. BE SURE TO ANSWER ALL THE QUESTIONS!

When you respond to these questions, you should be specific and cite specific details either from the readings, class lectures, or your own research. You should cite specific events and/or cultures as you answer these questions. Also, you should make sure to cite your sources in your response and include a reference list at the end of your essay. Citations must be from reputable sources. Sites like Wikipedia, about.com, etc. are NOT considered acceptable sources.
Higher credit will be given for responses that show evidence of a systematic and comprehensive understanding of the topics involved.
You are encouraged to review the rubric for this assignment and make sure that you answer each question in detail and with specifics.
Correct use of English is a fundamental requirement for your papers to be graded. If errors in English make it difficult for a grader to understand your sentences, or excessively slow down the grader to mark your technical errors, your paper will be returned to you for further work on its English, and your grade for the paper will be deferred until it is resubmitted with corrected English. If your assignment is returned for an excessive number of grammatical errors, you will be allowed to rewrite and resubmit it within two weeks of the original return date. If not resubmitted by the date set by your instructor, you will receive a zero (0) for the writing assignment.
