Symbol and Point of view

  1. Watch the following short videos about symbols in poetry:
  2. Read “My Papa’s Waltz” again: “My Papa’s Waltz”https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/43330/my-papas-waltz
    • Ask yourself:
      • Are there symbols in this poem (the waltz, for example, or the belt) that represent something more than just “an object, action, or event?”
  3. Watch this short video about “point of view” in literature, paying close attention to the narrator or speaker’s perspective:
    • Point of View:
      • The speaker in “My Papa’s Waltz” is the adult son who is looking back, with his own point of view, on his nightly waltz with his father. Other characters in the poem who might take a different point of view from him would be the “child” this speaker was at the time of the waltz and his mother who is looking on while it takes place.
  4. Write at least a 300 word narrative text that takes the point of view of one of the “characters” you as a reader identify with in this poem.
    • You may choose the adult speaker, the child he was, or his mother. State “who you are.”
    • As you present your point of view, make sure to include what some of the objects, actions, or events in the poem symbolize to you.
    • Begin like this:
      • I am ………
      • Post your narrative
