ssignment: Write an explication of a poem. You will carefully analyze the poem and explain what you think it means. You will support your understanding of the poem with evidence from the poem and your own reasoning. This essay should have an introduction paragraph, multiple body paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph. This essay should be carefully organized and have few or no grammar errors.
Discussion of writing about literature is in Chapters 1 and 2 of the book “Literature for Writing: A Reader for Comp II. 2nd edition. Cengage. 2015. (Waterfall on cover). Examples essays are attached below.
This essay should reflect your own reasoning and reading of the poem; DO NOT USE OUTSIDE SOURCES other than a dictionary.
This essay should include all of the following:
1. Show that you understand the basic meaning of the poem. What is the poem about?
2. Discuss the form of the poem and how it relates to the content (ideas). Is the poem open form or closed form? Can you get more specific (sonnet, etc.)? Does the rhythm and rhyme (or lack thereof) contrast with or support the ideas of the poem?
3. How do/did/might readers respond to this poem? Why should readers care?

Documentation:
Use the MLA system of documentation. You are responsible for properly citing sources within your text and on your Works Cited page. Your textbook includes examples and guidelines on how to properly cite your sources.
Length: 2-4 pages (500+ words)
Format: Typed, double-spaced, Times New Roman font, one inch margins, heading on page one, all pages except page one numbered.
