Guidelines:

Follow the syllabus and class notes guidelines for written assignments and apply my comments from your Favorite Topic assignment. In addition, use the format for position papers described below. If you have questions, don’t hesitate to ask.

Sheri Fink’s riveting essay describes a situation that developed during 2005’s hurricane Katrina which sparked a national debate and federal legislation. It is not possible to read the essay without forming opinions about the dilemmas she presents. For this reason, besides practicing our expository essay skills in the context of scientific writing style, we will also present the essay as a position paper. To this end, use the following tips for writing position papers.

Writing a Position Paper in the Sciences (modified from Purdue University’s OWL site):

Purpose:

Following the basic guidelines and organization for an expository essay, the writer will present each position (side) of a specific issue. Evidence should be provided for each position so that the reader can make their own decision.

Each position should be one that can be supported in a logical, fact-based manner.

It is important to present the different positions in an unbiased, balanced manner.

In this case, balanced means to devote approximately equal proportions of your essay to each position.

For this short of an essay, you will probably not have enough room for rebuttals, so just present the positions themselves.

Guidelines:

First, Fink’s essay presents several issues.Choose only one for your assignment. Organize your pre-writing thoughts with outline, mind map, concept map, etc. Remember to represent all parts of the essay:Introduction, each paragraph in the body of the paper, conclusion, and reference section (if necessary). In your pre-writing thoughts, be sure to use the basic organization for an expository essay, as we discussed in class and presented in the course packet handout. Second, after the pre-writing exercise is complete, it is time to write the position paper.Use the following in addition to expository essay guidelines:

Introduction paragraph

Clearly state the issue you will discuss.

Clearly state the positions you will describe.

Demonstrate a clear, solid understanding of the issue andpositions.

Present the relevance of the topic by making connections between the issue

and Fink’s descriptions.

Body of the paper

Use a separate paragraph for each position.

Present each logical position for the issue in a well-balanced, supported, and respectful manner.

Conclusion paragraph

Summarize the issue and the different positions.

Use care: Do not to merge the positions together.

Do not introduce new information in the conclusion section.

Present a clear discussion of the issue’s implication(s)i.e. how the issue includes or connects to other topics.

Finally, present your view.

References

If necessary, add a reference section (APA style).

Essay Length

Aim to write approximately five paragraphs.
