assignment sheet:

Analyzing Song Lyrics

English II

Music has a significant place in American culture. Whether you like it or not, you are surrounded by mass-produced music on a daily basis—in your car, at the mall, and in your home. Analyzing song lyrics in light of rhetorical techniques such as purpose, audience, and context provides a more comprehensive understanding of the landscape of popular culture and its role in society.

Purpose: To understand the rhetorical nature of popular texts, such as the lyrics of a song. Ultimately, the goal of the assignment is to contribute an original and significant interpretation of a song lyric that adds to the already existing body of scholarly literature on music and society.

Audience: Your peers in academia, including informed music listeners.

Assignment:

Choose a song from our culture (past or present) and print a copy of the lyrics. Listen to your song choice several times, paying close attention to the lyrics each time. I highly recommend choosing a song that has plenty of relevant content to write a thoughtful and comprehensive analysis. You will hand in the lyrics with your final draft. Discuss what the artist is trying to say by identifying the subject and theme of the song. Break down the song line by line to interpret it. Single out specific phrases or words that capture your attention and explain why they do. Use the following questions to help you interpret the lyrics:

1). What is the song about or subject? What is the theme of the song?

2). Note the diction and tone of the song and how it works with the theme. Is it upbeat, melancholy, angry, genuine, and so on?

3). Is there figurative language (metaphors and similes) in the song? How does it contribute to the theme?

4). What kind of imagery (words or phrases that appeal to the five senses) is used in the song? What effect does it produce? How does it support the theme?

5). Are there any symbols? How do the symbols contribute to the theme?

6). Why do you think the artist wrote the song? Read about the artist and why he/she wrote this song. How is it a factor of the theme?

7). What group(s) seems to comprise the song’s target audience? What leads you to this conclusion? Why is the theme relevant to this audience?

8). You may incorporate secondary sources from academic literature that illuminate the cultural or historical content of the song in regards to the theme.

Essay Requirements: The essay should be 3-4 typed pages, double-spaced using MLA format. Include a title for your essay and also a Works Cited page that lists where you got the lyrics as well as other sources you used in the essay. MORE

Suggested Format: Begin with an introduction that includes background information on the song you are analyzing. For example, summarize what the song is about and its subject. Your thesis should include the theme of the song. For the body paragraphs, provide an original and insightful analysis of the song’s lyrical content. Do this by interpreting and explaining how each verse supports the song’s theme. Incorporate words and phrases from the song as supporting evidence. Then explain how the evidence supports the song’s theme. End with a conclusion that says something about the implications of your findings.
