Summary

In reading through the second half of “Blindspot: Hidden Biases of Good People”, by M. Banaji & A. Greenwald, we go more in-depth on the not just the causes of mindbugs, but the effects of them, & the repercussions that could follow. Throughout these chapters, we focus on some of humanities biggest follies: stereotypes & in-groups. Almost every known group has them, whether or not they have positive or negative connotations. For example, the notion that men in the workforce acquire the most arduous & taxing jobs while women get easier work or stay home and tend to chores may have been true up until the mid-1900s, but it is, for the most part, untrue now (111-112). However, men & women still withhold the concepts of masculinity & femininity, respectively & shared, and the connotations of those concepts are what makes this gender-specific blindspot a problem, unless, of course, you were to run into a slender, cross-dressing man or a bulky, body-building woman. Crude humor aside, stereotypes can range from docility or violence to intelligence or idiocy. Some groups have only positive stereotypes, others have mostly negatives, & many groups themselves unwillingly accept them, which inadvertently further projects the positive or negative image.

Others discriminate based on whether or not an individual is a member of an in-group. This can be partly mixed with other biases, such as racism, but it mainly dictates whether or not you will be accepted as part of a particular group of people; a few less extreme examples of this are clubs, forum chats, & sororities. Or maybe you’d be excluded from the advantages reserved for only a select few, like with the incident of Professor Carla Kaplan’s hand (140-141). While some of the time these events can only serve to benefit, they only benefit members of the in-group, while outsiders are left with no advantages.

Analysis

It’s time to be real. We, as a collective human race, are slowly turning into a bunch of morons. Without thinking, we let the notions & ideas programmed into our minds think for us. We discriminate everything: social status; economic class, race, religion, etc. It’s become a part of our identity. If left unchecked, it will likely mean our demise millions of years before the Sun expands & engulfs us.

It is hard to fully grasp the idea of unconscious thought processes, such as favoritism or self-hatred, no matter how great or small they may be within us; given that our minds have programmed themselves since our birth, we grow ever accustomed to what we see, hear & analyze. That makes it difficult to simply ignore them. Unless we trace our blindspots to their sources, & discipline ourselves to think without discrimination, generations to come may suffer the fate of past ones.
