The death of Terri Schiavo was morally acceptable according to the ethical theory of utilitarianism. When taking into consideration all of the possible consequences, the death of Terri was ultimately the one that resulted in the greatest decrease in pain. The amount of grief being suffered by both the parents as well as the husband upon seeing Terri’s vegetative state every day was most likely unimaginable. Not to mention the financial strain upon the husband and parents must have been extremely stressful. The constant battle between hopeful trial followed by unsuccessful results must have been emotionally draining. In regards to Terri, there was no hope of recovering or regaining consciousness. In light of all of these aspects of the situation, and according to the utilitarian view, the decision to remove Terri from the feeding tube and other medical machines was the decision that resulted in the least amount of pain inflicted as well as the most possible happiness. Although the family would still grieve over her death, once Terri had passed, she no longer had to suffer in her condition. She was released from her utterly useless body, which is what her husband said she would have wanted in the first place. No longer did her husband have to pass by her body every day and constantly be reminded of her vegetative state. No longer would her family have to pay the no doubt costly medical bills either. To conclude, Terri was ethically killed according to what utilitarians would consider the best decision for the greatest amount of people.
