Modern science is most directly based upon rationalism; however, empiricism also plays an important role in certain aspects. Science is more closely related to acquiring knowledge through rationalism because scientists base their experiments and research on reason rather than on sensory experience. However, sensory observations can in fact lead to rationalistic thinking, which is why empiricism plays a minor role in the science we are familiar with today. For example, a scientist may observe through their senses that their skin burns while out in the sun. However, it is through rationalism that the scientist then reasons that the sun is the cause of this burn. The well-known “if-then” statement found in all scientific experiments is not the result of sensory experience, but rather the result of a conclusion that came from reasoning. Take into consideration the scientific theories that pertain to how the universe works, like Einstein’s theory of relativity. There is no way to accurately determine if Einstein’s theory explains the nature of black holes; however, it is through reasoning that astronomers have been able to deduce that the character of a black hole is consistent with Einstein’s theory. However, some credit must be given to knowledge that comes from sensory observations. For example, the knowledge of the structure of the human heart must have come from physically observing the heart using sight and touch; however, the actual function must have been deduced from rationalistic thought processes.
