Making clinical decisions based on prior research is the standard, evidence-based practice utilizes the best available resources information presented in a form that is easily available for practitioners to use when needed. (Duggan, et al 2015) Practitioners use “a method to use critically appraised and scientifically proven evidence for delivering quality health care to a specific population.”(Majid, et al, 2011) One example of this is the collaboration that the hospitals in this area have with the local health unit. The hospitals report covid infection rates and share knowledge about disease process and treatment protocols to care for patients in the community.

Public health accreditation mostly encourages a form of collaboration between some types of academic setting and healthcare setting to assist with addressing local healthcare needs, community health and well-being. (Duggan, et al 2015) This is frequently done in many healthcare settings. Many nursing school programs partner with local hospitals to provide clinical practice opportunities for their students. Many students have mentors in the clinical settings that provide basic guidance about basic nursing skills. There is knowledge sharing among the clinical nurses and the students. Many new protocols have been developed and revised based on new articles and knowledge sharing information.

Some unit managers and educators have relationships with universities where they are currently or previously employed. These relationships allow them access to current best practice protocols. The current unit manager on the med-surg unit at my current hospital is on the unit council at the hospital and an adjunct professor at a local university. She collaborates with the school of nursing and shares the information that she gained with the hospital. She often prints articles to share with the nursing staff and takes these articles to the unit council meetings to help initiate change, when needed. The ability to “involve policymakers in research activities when possible helps to bring them to see how research can impact workflows in the healthcare system.” (Meghan et al, 2020)
