Description of the assignment

In our third synthesis research essay, you will draft a logical argument pertaining to human behavior visa-a-vi justice or injustice under the prospects of military intervention that can be observed in various settings such as ground war, troop deployment, air strikes, sea level war fare, genocide, torture, violence, and intolerance. After you engage with several resources including Night, “Military Intervention and the Prospects for Democratization,” Genocide (for genocide, you may choose one of the following: Jews, Armenian, Assyrian, Greek, Cambodian, Romani, Zunghar, Ustasha, Massacres of Hutus, Massacres of Mayans, war in Darfur, Persecution of Yazidis, Herero and Monaqua, An-Anfal, and any other genocide that you deem to fit into the definition that you STIPULATE for genocide), TED Talk Why I Chose a Gun, TED Talk How The U.S. Should Use Its Superpower Status?, C.Q Researcher: U.S. Global Engagement: Should America Be more Assertive on the World Stage?, and Carl Rogers: Communication: Its Blocking and its Facilitation, you will need to pick at least two additional references that relate to the topic. You may add to the above list of references any of the previous texts, articles, TED Talks, documentaries, and biographies that we have tackled prior to this third synthesis research essay. We have already started the process of delving into these topics though you will notice that the prompts that appear at the end of these directions address specific issues that respond quite well to developing a position research paper, one that will become much clearer as we proceed in our discussion of the prompts.

Don’t forget: I strongly believe in your ability and skill to address the requirements of this assignment and compose a fine paper.

The introduction

In the introduction to your synthesis research essay, you are highly recommended to use multiple introductory techniques from the fourteen techniques that we have learned. Here try to avoid the much used technique of asking questions. Make sure that the techniques that you actually implement will captivate your readers’ attention (college bound readers). Included in the introductory technique/s, you must use a brief historical background about the issue. Apart from the introductory technique/s, you need to add the following to your introduction:

Brief STIPULATIVE definition of basic terms that will appear in the following chapters of your research.

Literature review of the issue. Here you must advance two opposing views presented by two experts.

A Rogerian enthymematic claim/ assertion/ controlling idea, one that effectively demonstrates/states your position about the issue. Remember you are developing a claim of POLICY for your thesis.

Place your main idea (claim/ assertion/ controlling idea) towards the end of your introduction since you are preparing your essay deductively rather than inductively. Your introduction should be a minimum of 150-180 words.

The body of your synthesis research essay: Here you have three chapters

For the body of your synthesis research essay, you will have to develop three chapters:

Defense Chapter: Here you defend your position (your claim/ assertion/ controlling idea) with at least three separate paragraphs each of which handles one aspect that defends your position. For this part of your synthesis research essay, you may considerably benefit from the support chart that we created during our first two weeks of the semester. Of course, more details shall follow during class discussions if you ask. (We will make use of Aristotle and Toulmin here).

Concession Chapter: You acknowledge the validity of at LEAST TWO ideas advanced by your opponents (Carl Rogers concepts work here). For each idea that you accept from your opponents, you need to be sincere by providing ample reasons to why you accept your opponent’s idea. If you accept more than two ideas from your opponent, then you need to develop more than two concession paragraphs.

Refutation Chapter: For your refutation chapter, you will have to pick three ideas from your opponents. For each idea that you have chosen, you will need to show how your opponent idea is invalid and illogical. For this purpose, you will use some of the logical fallacies that we will study for this assignment. You will develop at least three paragraphs for this chapter.

Important Note: For each one of the body paragraphs, I expect that you will have a minimum of 140 words.

The Conclusion

For your conclusion, use any one of the techniques for the concluding paragraph/s; however, I expect that you use recommendations for the future, summary of the main ideas, and suggestions in the form of solutions to the problem. Here you will draft at least one fully developed concluding paragraph with 140 words

Useful resources to be implemented for this synthesis research essay

Aristotle’s concepts of argument and counter argument

Carl Rogers ideas about concession

Steven Toulmin’s theory of law-based argument and counter argument

Toulmin Plus as modification to Toulmin’s original theory.

The prompt for the third synthesis research essay

You are studying another long standing nation based practice for military intervention that may be promoting or perhaps hurting the principle of fairness and justice that appeals to most, if not, all Americans. Through careful reading, watching, and reviewing, you are closely analyzing at least six professionally prepared references Night, “Military Intervention and the Prospects for Democratization,” Genocide (for genocide, you may choose one of the following: Jews, Armenian, Assyrian, Greek, Cambodian, Romani, Zunghar, Ustasha, Massacres of Hutus, Massacres of Mayans, war in Darfur, Persecution of Yazidis, Herero and Monaqua, An-Anfal, and any other genocide that you deem to fit into the definition that you STIPULATE for genocide), TED Talk Why I Chose a Gun, TED Talk How The U.S. Should Use Its Superpower Status?, C.Q Researcher: U.S. Global Engagement: Should America Be more Assertive on the World Stage?, and Carl Rogers: Communication: Its Blocking and its Facilitation (plus two of your own selected references). You may add to the above list of references any of the previous texts, articles, TED Talks, documentaries, and biographies that we have tackled prior to this third synthesis research essay (Stevenson’s TED talk, We Need to Talk about Social Injustice, Adichie’s article, The Danger of a Single Story, Cotton and Thompson’s , Picking Cotton). You may merge other references to your discussion if you so choose.

In this third synthesis research essay, you will do your best to persuade your reader of your position about promoting or hurting justice. To achieve this goal, directly respond to any of the following:

  1. Should our military be ordered to interfere in establishing peace abroad to other nations?
  2. Should our military be used to advocate for our principles of freedom and democracy?
  3. Should our military respond to violent acts happening in other nations?
  4. Should our military be tasked with the goal of ending any form of genocide?
  5. Should our military be confined to protect our nations when only our nation is attacked?

Important note about the above five prompts:

  • More details and examples will be provided in class when you ask how to draft your response to any of the above prompts.
  • I may also entertain your own choice of a prompt to develop your synthesis research essay; however, you need to share with me your prompt before you start working on responding to the prompt.Final Important Notes:
  1. Do not forget to follow the techniques that you learned in summarizing references, directly quoting or paraphrasing statements from your sources, and blending these ideas into your synthesis research essay. You will need to use all the techniques for blending references.

  3. Follow the conventions of Standard English sentence structure.
