• Discuss psychology as a science and how psychologists approach the study of human thought and behavior.
• Identify how psychologists collect and interpret empirical data.

Instructions

Step 1:

The first step is to locate a peer-reviewed research article on a topic in psychology. It is recommended that you select one of the articles below. If you would like to select one on a topic that is not on the list, please check with your instructor first.

To find the articles, go to http://libguides.aacc.edu/psychologyand select the PsycARTICLES database. Enter your library card number(1950000898861.) and click submit. Now enter the title of the article you have chosen and click search.

Step 2:

Read the article. You will want to take your time reading the article and taking notes on the article prior to starting your paper. Journal research articles are complex and challenging to read. (Tips for reading and comprehending articles and information on the structure of articles are provided in the research article assignment module.)

Step 3:

Write your paper according to the outline provided below. Make sure that you review the grading rubric prior to completing your paper. The paper should be written in APA format and should include the use of in text citations and a reference page. (Information on APA format and a template are provided in the research article assignment module.)

• Objective summary of the peer-reviewed journal research article. (Approximately 1.5-2 pages)
  • Explain the overall background to this article. In other words, describe the “big picture” context of this study and why it is important. (2-3 sentences).
  • Identify the researcher’s questions and hypotheses.
  • Describe the participants, the key variables, and how the variables were measured.
  • Explain the results of the study. Indicate the results that the authors stated were statistically significant (and those that were not). Also include information indicating how the authors interpreted the results of their study (discussion section).
• Critical review of the research and suggestions for future studies. (Approximately 1-1.5 pages)
  • Discuss limitations of the research study including information related to the participants, variables, and procedures. Explain why these are limitations to the research. (Some limitations can come from the authors, but some should be your own ideas.)
  • Building off of the research study you read, design a future study. Explain the basics of the study including your research question, variables, participants, and procedures. Discuss how your study would extend the research on the topic in the original study you read.

Step 4:

Submit your work in the Research Article Assignment Dropbox. Your paper must be submitted as either a Word document or a pdf.
