: Topic 5 DQ 1Reply to LaurenCAM refers to complementary and alternative medical treatment. Complementary treatment is, when a treatment outside of Western medicine is combined with typical Western medicine treatment. Where alternative medicine uses an alternate treatment in place of Western medicine. Complementary approaches include: natural products, yoga, Tai Chi, Qi Gong, deep breathing, guided imagery, meditation, massage, chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation, special diets, homeopathy, and progressive relaxation (NIH, 2018). Integrative health care is a growing practice across the United States, which brings conventional and complementary approaches together, by using a holistic, patient-focused approach to health care and wellness (NIH, 2018). According to Eisenberg in 2005, “Patients more likely to use complementary or alternative therapies have been found to be women, Caucasian, between the ages of 35 and 49, highly educated, and affluent” (Falvo, 2011). CAM is beneficial as it integrates conventional and alternative practices, which is beneficial in addressing all the needs of the individual, such as mind, body, and spirit.ReferenceFalvo, D. (2011). It is used to improve the health of a person mentally, physically or for addiction. CAM is use of resources such as biofeedback, guided imagery, hypnotherapy, meditation, relaxation techniques as well as special diets or herbal remedies to assist with the holistic healing process. Popularity with the use of CAM is the belief that more harm than good comes from conventional medicine such as immunizations, chemotherapy or radiation(“National institutes of health,” n.d.).CAM is based on healing of the patient as a whole; mind, body and spirit. It is individualized for the patient. It has been thought that only the patients that were poorly educated, naïve, gullible and from low socioeconomic status where the people to use CAM. It has been shown that it is however women, Caucasians, highly educated people of affluent status between the ages 35-49 use CAM alone or in combination with convential medicine. The patients that are chronically ill or at the end-stage of their illness will use some form of CAM to maintain their general health rather than for curative reasons(Falvo, 2011).ReferencesFalvo, D.
