For this assignment, you are asked to reflect on your journey throughout this course and to creatively depict your cultural journey as it relates your identities and your understanding of other identities. Specifically, you should illustrate aspects of your identity and other reference group orientations (race/ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, class, age, educational status, disability, religious/spiritual beliefs, etc.). It is expected that you will express the messages (societal, familial, interpersonal, etc.) you received throughout your life (and throughout this course) that validated or invalidated these identities at some point. Furthermore, you should include a representation of your next steps or future goals as it relates to measures you will take to foster continued self-awareness and awareness/appreciation for diversity.

, this assignment encourages your creativity. Students are responsible for presenting a symbol that represents their individual journey through the course. The symbol could include, but not limited to, the following: drawings, paintings, sculptures, videos, short performances (e.g. dances, songs, poems, stories, etc.), childhood items (e.g. toys, action figures, dolls, cards, etc.), and other personal belongings (e.g. CDs, posters, unique items, etc.). Once you have identified your symbol, please write a paragraph (7-15 sentences) describing the significance of this symbol and how it illuminates your personal journey in this course. Your writing should describe how you developed your understanding of one or more social identities discussed in the class. This understanding could relate to how you have come to identify with these identities or how you understand others who might have differing views or identities. Also, include messages(societal, familial, interpersonal, etc.) that you received (prior to and during the class) about these identities that validated and/or invalidated these identities. Discuss how you have reconciled these messages to establish your current development.

Your symbol should be personal to you and how you viewed your journey through this class. My assessment of your writing responses and your oral presentation is not about whether the symbol is relevant or whether it makes sense in my mind. Instead, I am looking for your creativity to flourish in this presentation with respect to capturing your experience through these 16 weeks and your way of communicating these thoughts to the class. Your written and oral story should tell me the significance of the symbol in your life experience, and then, it should convey how it ties into the class. Shape your story so that we all can understand why it has meaning to and for you.
