Read Chapter 4: Confucianism, pages 154-193

II. Writing Assignment:

Complete Worksheet #6 and turn in by Sunday night, March 19 by 11:59 pm. It is located in the Week Seven folder under the Assignment Link on Blackboard. Please submit your homework through that assignment link. Instructions for this are given elsewhere.

Question One:

1. Select either the most striking sentence about Confucius or his career and quote it with its page reference, or quote a saying of Confucius that you find particularly meaningful. For either choice, explain what you think the sentence means and why it is meaningful to you. Do not select the same sentence as your classmates unless you have a different reason for selecting it. I’m trying to avoid repetition.

2. Does the Realist or the Mohist solution sound more reasonable to you. And why?

3. Select a sentence from Mo-Tzu’s teaching that seems important . Write it down here and then explain why you think it is important.

1. What do you think of Confucius’ solution to the Realist/Mohist controversy? Do you agree with Confucius, why or why not?

2. Choose one of the five virtues Confucius wanted to cultivate through his notion of “Deliberate Tradition. Write the virtue down and explain what it means. Evaluate it. Do you think we could use more of this virtue in our modern day world? Why or why not?

3. Describe Confucius’ idea of the human self. Do you agree with Confucius? Why or why not? You could also compare it to the Buddhist concept of “No-Self.” Are they similar or different?

4. Do you think Confucianism is an ethic or a religion? Give reasons to support your view.
