1. Which theory of happiness do you believe to be most helpful to the world? Which is the least? Support and defend your stance for both.
2. The English philosopher Betrand Russell said work is a major component of happiness. (Similarly, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, who wrote “The Yellow Wallpaper,” claimed that without work, we are parasites devoid of purpose.) Do you believe Russell’s statement to be true? What kind of work would you most enjoy doing…and what kind of work do you actually plan to (or currently) do? Are they the same?
3. Contrast, with an example for each, eros and agape. (These examples can come from the reading, from movies/tv shows, or from your own experiences and observations, if you care to include them.)
4. Consider Brave New World, 1984, and The Handmaid’s Tale (which is a really absorbing series on Hulu, if you haven’t seen it): describe the major theme that connects these stories. Do you believe that “love,” however you personally define it, can be controlled and influenced by outside forces?
I just up a few lines for each question, no citing required.
