TASK 1: Helping “experiment” (10 points)

For this task, as a conclusion to our scientific exploration of social psychology, you will be putting on your “researcher hats” again and conducting a helping experiment. Remember, this is to be an experiment so you have to manipulate some variable. To simplify things, let’s all agree that we only need two conditions and a minimum of 8 participants/subjects, 4 in each condition. These participants can be strangers or people you know.

You need to think of a hypothesis that is related to helping. Come up with at least ONE independent variable that you believe will affect or be related to helping. Figure out what type of specific helping behavior you are going to study. The best way to do this is to base your hypothesis and variables on research/theory/concepts in the book. If you have someone who can help you, you can even have a confederate who helps you do something different in two groups. If it’s difficult to do this experiment in person, if you set it up well, you may even conduct it online with your friends and family.

This doesn’t have to be too complicated; you can select a simple variable that you think will affect helping (and of course, has psychological backing to it). It can be anything — something about people, something you manipulate, something about the situation – that you believe will be related to helping behaviors. Needless to say, please select a helping situation that doesn’t freak people out! 🙂 If in doubt, feel free to run it by me. Remember, we’re not doing informed consent or debriefing so this cannot be something that can cause discomfort for people! If possible, you are welcome to debrief.

Come back here and post a write-up of your study. Provide each of the following modeled after journal articles:

1. Introduction (this is a biggie) – Discuss the intention of the study. Don’t forget to clearly identify what the independent and dependent variables are, some research that exists about these and your specific hypothesis based on psychological research/theory.

2. Method (subjects, procedure etc.) – keep this minimal but you need to explain basics of your study. What was done? Who participated; age? gender? Did you use a confederate?

3. Results (no need for anything elaborate since we only have 8 participants and no complicated data but you need to provide some information about what was found). It’s always nice to provide basic info maybe in a table, percents about how your two groups were different.

4. Discussion (this is the biggie and should be the longest part of the assignment) – In this section, consider if the results match research findings and what they tell us about helping. It is very important to provide depth in your discussion section by considering and applying concepts from your readings but also to consider limitations, implications etc. even if you didn’t get the type of results as expected.

3. Brief reaction to the content

4. Analyze and apply various social psychological concepts(this should be a large part of the write-up)
