1. From the Women’s March to Black Lives Matter, social media has been foundational in recent political events. The power of social networking sites to organize groups of people and do the work of social movements to come together is something revolutionary. Personal testimonials using the #Metoo and #Timesup tags in twitter to showing police shootings with #Blacklivesmatter tags are testament to that.

At the same time the effectiveness of social media for organizing positive social action is up for debate; critics say it can become disconnected from real world action, and bypasses the need for theconstruction of organizational infrastructure and learning through trial and error that characterized the 1960s Civil Rights movement.The Arab Spring, for example, used social media to organize young peopleand put pressure put on despots, but it failed to produce substantive positive change in most of the countries.
