Homework due Monday 26 March *consider this a rough draft, since we will write this kind of paper again (although a bit longer next time), in response to the play we read right after T.R.o.A.

CRITICAL REVIEW

Purpose: Don’t try to be Siskel and Ebert. A “thumbs-up” or “thumbs-down” won’t be sufficient. Instead, make a specific claim about the work which you support with evidence from the work itself. In other words, comment on the strengths and weaknesses as you see it in your eyes. Ideally, a critical review is an attempt to help readers see the work as you see it and also persuade them to read (or not read) the novel.

Goal: At least one page

The review should attempt the following points:

-Include a chronological summary of the important events and details.

-Evidence (quotes or summary) from the book itself.

-Proper MLA citation for all evidence used.

-Also, make it original. Include something we could only learn by seeing the work through your eyes/perspective.

These are some suggested questions that you might want to consider when writing:

-What is the significance of the title? Does it provide a clue to the “meaning” of the novel?

-How is the plot constructed? Does the story make sense? Is there a particularly vivid moment or scene that stands out because of its significance in the plot or its artistry?

-How do the main characters develop during the course of the work? Describe their personalities and consider how they are presented (you might look at names, speech, actions). Are the characters realistic or caricatured?

-What is the function of the setting?

-Is the work educational as well as entertaining? As far as knowledge, what would one gain by reading this work? As far as pleasure, why might one enjoy reading this work?
