Mr./Mrs. President 2020; Current News vs. Fake News; Public Opinion Polls

1.President in Trump has yet to complete his first 100 days in office and yet political pundits have begun speculation of potential challengers to his reelection in 2020. For this week’s discussion you are required to research a member of Congress (or a member of the Senate) that you believe based on his/her qualifications would be a suitable President of the United States in 2020. In your post you are required to provide a minimum of three reasons why you believe the particular individual is qualified and would make a suitable U.S. President. Please note that if you select a candidate that identifies with the Republican party that candidate would need to defeat President Trump in the primary election as opposed to the general election.

Discuss why at this early stage you would support this candidate and encourage him/her to run for the office. Be sure to provide citation for this candidate to allow your peers to conduct research of their own on the individual.

I encourage to you research specific committees the individual serves on; bills introduced or co-sponsored by the individual; outside government experience; potential support from one of the major parties; age; gender; race etc.

In your replies to your peers discuss specifics that would prevent you from supporting the candidate they support.

2.For this week’s discussion you are required to research a current news topic/event and conduct research to determine if the news story is a legitimate story with credibility. President Trump has become synonymous with the term “fake news,” often accusing traditional news outlets of disseminating news stories that are not credible. You are required to research a current news story and based on your research determine if the story is credible. This particular discussion has a two-fold objective. This discussion is designed to introduce you to political websites that should become a part of your daily internet activity and encourage you to fact-check every political story/news event you encounter. Political news stories are often the easiest to manipulate and facts are often labeled as ‘alternative facts.’ A number of websites you can visit include but not limited to the following: huffingtonpost.com; drudgereport.com; salon.com; heritage.org; theroot.com; mediamatters.com; politico.com’ thinkprogress.com and realclearpolitics.com.

In your initial post be sure to cite the website you visited for the story and provide the steps you followed to fact check the story. The story must be a political story and provide a brief biography on the author of the story.

3. For this week’s discussion you are required to research and identify a public opinion poll regarding the Foreign policy of the Trump administration (Trump Doctrine) Polls dealing with Syria, North Korea and Afghanistan should be readily available. Based on the polling data discuss how much attention you believe the Trump administration should pay to the data. Discuss how and why one might argue that the Trump administration and political leaders in general should ignore poll results and rely on intelligence and then defend against that argument.

Be sure to identify and detail information the polling agency/organization.
