The Greenland ice sheet is currently melting at a rate of about 200 gigatons per year. What we’re not sure of is whether its rate of melting is increasing, by as much as 20 gigatons per year each year. If the rate is increasing at 20 gigatons per year, the amount that will melt in the next t years will be:

M1(t) = 10t² + 200t

while if it’s not, the amount that will melt in the next t years will just be:

M2(t) = 200t

1) Graph the total amount of ice that will melt over the next t years in each case.

2) Then find the volume of the Greenland ice sheet (you can do this by finding its average thickness and its area), and figure out how long it will take for the entire Greenland ice sheet to melt in each case.
