For this assignment, you must produce a formal review of the literature available on your research question. The purpose of a literature review is to orient your project in terms of the existing literature. This means you will need to synthesize the information you read in your sources, so you can apply it to your particular research question. You should not just summarize the information you read. While based on what you read, the literature review is mostly about your project. You’ll be using what you’ve read to strengthen or support your ideas or to show how your ideas differ from those that came before you. Most importantly; a literature review is not simply a book report or a regurgitation of all the articles you’ve read; literature reviews are a thoughtful synthesis of the research that has led to your project. Your review should emphasize what previews research has shown, and how it highlights a need for your very special research project.

Some notes on general requirements:

• Your finished paper should be roughly 3-5 pages long. If you are coming up short – review your paper and make sure that you are connecting the research to your question. If you are too long – make sure you are not spending too much time summarizing articles.
• You need to include at least 4 journal articles. Journal articles here refer to scholarly or scientifically reliable journals, not popular, journalistic, or trade publications.
• Remember, literature reviews are typically organized thematically – so make sure to identify 2-3 themes in the literature and organize with subheadings. Refer to course Workbook for examples.
• You must use proper ASA in-line and Works Cited citations. Place your Works Cited under a new heading on its own page at the end of your literature review document. Be sure to adhere to all ASA citation guidelines, outlined on the Course FAQ page and in the literature review lecture slides.
