I need two responses to one classmates discussion post.

RESPOND TO BOTH PARTS/100 words or more each

  • Build the discussion by posting thoughtful and substantive, interactive responses of 100 words or more to your classmates’ posts. Two instances of interaction are required and more are encouraged.
  • Interaction should include constructive criticism (positive and negative) offered in a supportive, collegial spirit. In an active learning experience such as discussion, constructive criticism can be a very powerful learning tool if offered in this manner.
  • The following questions may be used as guidance for a good response:1.Do you agree with the view put forth? Why/why not?2.What are some of the strengths of such a view? How might one go aboutbuilding upon and developing such a view?3.What are some of the shortcomings of such a view? What sorts ofobjections come to mind to the view put forth? All written material must also conform to proper standards for spelling and grammar.

Part 1: Case 4k Page.109: In this case the parties are the husband, the wife and an unborn. The moral issue at stake in this case is that the wife is trying to have a baby hoping that it will make their marriage better, after being married three years(Ruggiero 4k,pg.109). The couple have both had seriously problems during their relationships, one was a heavy drinker and the other couldn’t keep a job. They fought constantly during marriage, so they thought that if she would stop taking her birth control and have a baby that things would get better between them. I don’t think that having a baby would solve the problem. A baby wouldn’t keep a man, but hopefully it would help solve the married couples problem and they would’ve a better lifestyle. We should always act in ways that fully respects other people according to Kant’s Principles of Ends.

Part 2: Yes, I do agree with the utilitarians that social and religious customs stands in the way of happens. For consequentialism to be practicable, we must be able to make accurate assessments of how much utility something might produce. Utility ought to be both predictable and measurable(Burnor and Raley. Page.97). Happiness, however, is vastly more elusive. Happiness does not typically just happen as an effect of some act. It is more the product of how one live. Identifying utility with happiness thus does not look very promising either, despite its appeal in the abstract. Mill agreed that utility must be understood in a way that makes observable and even measurable(Burnor and Raley. page97). Mills proposed that we give greater moral weight to higher-quality experience than to experience of lower quality and that we should incorporate this difference directly in our evaluation of consequence. Human beings need the stimulation and variety of both higher and lower pleasures.
