how much difference?

answer the follow up questions (in bold) about the attached essay

Since in this story you write mainly about Foundation (and the uses of vast space and time in SF), for your followup let me ask you about The Time Machine (and the uses of *really* vast stretches of time). One way to get at this might be to think about what authors *don’t* do in these novels. Asimov, for example, decided not to populate the vast spaces of the galaxy with intelligent aliens. And Wells does not use the distant future as an occasion to bring intelligent aliens to earth. A lot of modern SF, by contrast, seems to assume that aliens are “out there” somewhere, and that it’s only a matter of time before we find them or they find us. But Foundation and The Time Machine both leave out aliens and keep the focus on humans.

In Foundation, those humans are biologically the same as we are, but in The Time Machine, humans have evolved into two species of post-humans, the Eloi and Morlock, who are neither quite human nor quite alien. Call them quasi-alien. This gets me to wondering whether The Time Machine is really any different than a typical Star Trek episode. The Time Traveller travels through time, encounters some different/alien beings, engages in a series of adventures, and barely escapes with his life before returning to the safety of his own time. Is this really any different than someone traveling through space, encountering some different/alien beings, engaging in a series of adventures, and barely escaping with their life before returning to the safety of their own planet? How much difference does it really make whether our hero travels through time or through space?

The main difference I see is that the time travel novum allows the writer to comment on humanity in different ways. By using the time-travel trick, Wells is able to say, “This is what we humans will become if we continue our rigid socioeconomic class system into the future: our different classes will evolve into different species.” Time travel allows Wells to convey a certain message that space travel could not. Can you think of any other significant differences between time travel and space travel?
