Thank you for your post. I really like how you not only selected five statements but broke them down into classifications. I agree that every one that you picked out is very bad, though I would say that the one that gives me the most reason for pause is the idea of imposing values onto a client or group. I never want to make others think like me or put my belief system onto someone else. I do think that many clients will ask for our opinion, which to me, makes me feel like we walk a very fine line. For example, I currently help people who are receiving state and federal benefits, find employment or help them succeed in their educational goals so as to get employed. Many people do not really even know how to look for a job, apply or interview, etc. Because of this, many will simply ask how to do something or ask for my “professional” opinion on how to approach a task or challenge. I help but always preface by saying “In the past I have done…but you must find your own balance on how to approach this.” I do this because I never want to “tell” someone what to do. I feel this applies to what we are studying because many may be seeking guidance and, say, we are doing some time of solution based counseling, are wanting immediate answers so our opinions/values have to come into play at some point. I would ask, how do you think we as counselors can be helpful and guide and client and really walk with them during this time and not impose ourselves. What are your thoughts?
