·After Lincoln officially announced the Emancipation Proclamation in January 1863, the Civil War enveloped a two-fold purpose: fighting for reuniting the Union, and prohibiting slavery in captured confederate territory. This action set off a chain reaction that led to draft riots, which demonstrated Northern racism and casualties between blacks and whites. Go to Section 2 of this week’s Webtext titled “Why the North Won”, and view the resources provided for the section discussing the New York City Draft Riots. Next explain three (3) ways that these riots supported the ‘myth’ of the anti-racist liberals of the North and the difficulties facing free African Americans.

·Be sure to include which Union states held slaves throughout the Civil War and why this was an ongoing problem for Lincoln and the Union.

Hi Professor and class,

New York City Draft Riots wreaked a four-day streak in America, clearly showing the northern racism of whites towards African Americans.

White immigrant dock works refused to work beside African Americans, although they were the two groups of people that were equally the lowest on the Scio- economic ladder in the city.

The racism of blacks by whites even fell upon young blacks, as an empty black orphanage was targeted and burned down by an angry mob.

Blacks continued to be targeted and even lynched, at least two African American men: a young sailor who had been attacked for speaking to a young white boy and a man who, dressed as his wife, was captured and killed when he attempted to escape to Brooklyn. Before the riots ended there may have been a total of nearly half a dozen black men who had been brutally beaten and lynched.

The states that held slaves throughout the Civil War were Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland and, Missouri were all critical to the Union. Maryland was north of the nation’s capital, Kentucky controlled the Ohio River, Missouri was the gateway to the west and Delaware, were all border states.
