Please find below the essay questions for test 2. Remember this part of the test will be take home. There are 3 choices only choose two questions to answer. ONE AND A HALF PAGES EACH QUESTION PLEASE!

Take home essays: Choose only two from the following list and provide a thoughtful, and detailed answer in essay form. Essays should be typed, double spaced, one inch margins, 12 point Times Roman or Arial font, and one to four pages in length.
1. Discuss how the United States was perceived as a world power in the late nineteenth century and the changes that occurred concerning its foreign policy. What were the motivations for American expansionism and how were they supported? What events led to the Spanish-American War of 1898, and what were the motivations for the United States to get involved? Finally, discuss what measure the U.S. took before recognizing Cuba’s independence, and what policy it adopted to ensure shipping routes to the markets of Japan and China and its significance?

2. How did the Progressive movement embrace ideas that were contradictory to the claim of American freedom and were these contradictions justified? Discuss the political party that supported the concerns of marginalized men and women, what were its beliefs, how did it organize the working class, and what were some of its successes both politically and socially? Discuss Roosevelt’s vision of New Nationalism and Wilson’s vision of New Freedom and how each man regarded government’s response to a progressive agenda? Finally, what vision would you support and why?

3. What measures did the United States government take to exercise control of economic affairs during WWI, what were the motivations, and what effect did this have on working-class and wealthy Americans? Discuss how the Wilson administration influenced notions of patriotism. Were these tactics justified during war time or did they infringe on the civil rights and civil liberties of Americans, if so how? Finally, what support did women give to the war effort and how did they use their support to bolster their causes (discuss this)?
