While exploring healthfinder.org I really paid close attention to how user-friendly this site is. It seemed pretty easy to navigate around and find specific cancers. This can be a very important aspect for the elderly population. Information is good but the information you can find and use is better. I really like that you can type in your age and sex and it gives you a list of things you can do to be proactive towards your health. Prevention should definitely be a priority in community health settings.

Another reputable resource that is valuable to consumers and healthcare professionals alike is NCCN Guidelines. Not only is every diagnosis available but it covers all national standards of care. The best part about this site is that it is able to be used by the layperson, with basic computer knowledge. NCCN Guidelines meet the challenge that providers and patients face in organizing copious amounts of information and making it understandable (Goldberg et al., 2011).

We are living in a time where patients are more involved in their care than ever before. It is imperative that patients have resources with correct information that they can access easily. These types of sites will continue to grow and need to stay on top of the latest information. They need to meet the demand of the consumers that use them, which is evergrowing(Goldberg et al., 2011).

Health literacy is vital; it is the ability for patients to understand healthcare information to be able to make the appropriate health decisions and understand and follow instructions. The U.S. has a health literacy problem. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, nearly nine out of ten adults lack the necessary skills to manage their health and prevent disease. Low health literacy in patients has been connected to higher rates of chronic illnesses and preventable hospitalizations, poor self-care, and less frequent use of preventive services (ACP,2019).

An additional site that may be used for patients as resources would be the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the CDC.gov, the health protection agency to protect people from health, safety, and security threats. CDC has created a plan to improve how we create and share health information and provide public health services to different audiences (CDC,2020). The CDC continues to stay up to date with current health issues we face in the world. To make sure health literacy is improved, we want to communicate clearly and confirm patients’ understanding. Education levels among patients will be different, which means everyone has a better understanding of their health. I have used pictures, graphics, and sometimes just giving information pamphlets from my experience with kids to older adults. It all can depend on education level and understanding.
