As we have read and analyzed works this year, we have discussed how a work of literature reflects its historical and sociocultural context and how a literary work comments on and relates to its context. However, in 50 or 100 years, how will students & scholars study our contemporary literature as a reflection of our historical and sociocultural context? How will people know literature from the 2010s connected to our world?

For your project, choose a medium (poetry, prose, nonfiction [biography, essay, etc.], video, art, song lyrics, etc.) that reflects the issues, concerns, & major ideas that have defined the 2010s so far. Choose a method of expression that demonstrates your strengths in order to be optimally successful. Here are some pointers:

This is not necessarily about your life as an individual; think about what has defined our world, our nation, & our state during this time.

Think beyond allusions – think about what stylistic choices you can make that are indicative and reflective of what has happened in the past 8 years. Use the works we have read throughout the school year as models.

Ask yourself this question: what will stand the test of time? When 50-100 years have gone by, will people really remember the minor things, no matter how big they seem to us today? Probably not. Be mindful of that as you decide what defines us as a historical time period for the future.

Doing a little research about our world may be necessary in order to make a decision. That’s okay! Remember to keep an open mind when researching; don’t go into your research with your answer already in your head.
