Film Paper

Answer one of the following three questions with a two-page paper. (Will be ran through the plagiarism checker Turnitin)

Make it clear with your heading which question you are responding to.

Don’t cite Wikipedia.

Use a proper citation style (e.g., Chicago, MLA) of your choice.

Write using 1” margins, double spaced, and size 12 Times or Times New Roman font.

Be sure to employ formal terms and introduce films and characters as such: Film Title (Director YEAR) and Character’s Name (Actor’s Name).

  • David Bordwell and Kristin Thompson write that experimental films “challenge orthodox notions of what a movie can show and how it can show it” (pages 146-162 of reading attached). For your first paragraph, use supporting detail from this essay to explain and summarize how Bordwell and Thompson support and develop this argument about experimental cinema. For your second paragraph, analyze a brief segment from Meshes in the Afternoon (Maya Deren 1943) by explaining (using Bordwell and Thompson) how the film is an example of abstract form or/and associational form. Use relevant formal terms and sufficient detail to support your analysis.
  • Ivone Marguiles argues that John Cassavetes is an “amateur director,” but does not approach this term in the demeaning way that one might associate with it (pages 275-286 of reading attached). For your first paragraph, summarize Marguiles’s argument: in what ways should Cassavetes be considered an amateur director, and why is this useful to understanding his work? For your second paragraph, analyze a short segment from Shadows (Cassavetes 1959) and argue how this demonstrates Marguiles’s argument about Cassavetes that you previously explained. Use relevant formal terms and sufficient detail to support your analysis.
  • The late 1960s and early 1970s constituted a period in which both American cinema and American culture saw revolutionary change. Using the book ‘A History of Narrative Film’ Fifth Edition by David A. Cook (pages 669-690), make a clear and concise argument (i.e., not a list) about the most important things to understand about this period, using key supporting details from the reading. For your second paragraph, analyze a short segment from The Graduate (Mike Nichols 1967) in order to argue how the film demonstrates key, defining aspects of New Hollywood. Use relevant formal terms and sufficient detail to support your analysis (you may also find relevant readings useful for the second paragraph).
