Read Barry’s “The Ugly Truth About Beauty” and Tannen’s “Sex, Lies, and Conversation.

In your initial post, you should decide what the underlying thesis is for each essay. Then, compare the two essays in terms of content (what is the author talking about?), tone (what is the author’s voice like?) and who you believe gets closer to a universal truth about gender. The last point is a bit of an opinion; this should be a refreshing chance to “weigh in” after having to be so evidential and academic all semester. You’ll also notice that this assignment is a preview for the pre-writing assignment as we will be using essentially the same skills and structure to form our own essay ideas.

Rule 1 :You have to feedback their opinion with examples. (individually)

Rule 2: No plagiarism and citation

1.”The Ugly Truth about Beauty” Thesis: While men tend to focus on how they look once in their life and stick with that opinion, women are constantly being fed cosmetics and advice because they believe they never look good enough and must constantly change to be beautiful.

“Sex, Lies, and Conversation” Thesis: Men and women communicate in two completely different ways, which can lead to a lack of understanding between them that would not be there if they simply tried to understand the other sides perception of a normal conversation.

Content: In both essays, the authors discuss the different ways that men and women perceive the world, as well as how they perceive the other gender. In the first essay, it is discussed how men perceive their look verses how women perceive their looks. While in the second, it is about how women perceive conversation verse of men do it.

Tone: Both essays use a very satirical tone that help reflect how ridiculous and easy to solve the misunderstanding between men and women are. When both essays talk about the more serious issues that come from these misunderstandings though, they switch to a serious tone. This contrast emphasizes both ideas and shows how important (or ridiculous) they are.

I believe both essays get extremely close, yet are also fundamentally flawed in their analysis of gender. Speaking from my own experience, I have an equal amount of male and female friends. When I hang out in each friend group, I notice an extreme change in both my own persona and the environment around me. Conversation patterns change, topics change, and reactions change. However, saying that the two never mix neglects the idea of the thoughts of an individual. For example, in my own home, my father is the one who shares his day while my mother quietly listens. Then, they switch roles and she talks while he listens. Another great example is my best friends brother. He focuses enough on his appearance that he brings a blow dryer to the pool and has a whole bag of skin care cosmetics. In another hilarious situation, my sister had a crush on a guy friend of mine (and he to her,) but when they started getting closer she told me she didn’t like him any more because “He only ever wanted to talk about serious issues, and never joked around like a normal guy.” I’ve even had my own issues with this, as often times my female friends say I come across as uncaring when I say things similar to “you shouldn’t feel bad because your problems aren’t so bad” (a direct quote from Tannen’s paper of something a guy would say.) To end my ramble of an explanation, I will give a simple summary. In the business world, it is observed that there are male and female qualities, and that each person has a different percentage of each. The reason they are called male and female qualities are because it tends to be that women lay on one side on the spectrum while men are on the other, not that women and men are supposed to be one or the other. However, like my father, some of my friends, and me, people can lie on different percentages of the spectrum. Many business textbooks even offer tests one can do (similar to the Myers-Briggs tests) that can help you determine an approximate percentage. This percentage can help you determine where your skills are in business situations, and where your skills would best be utilized. When reading essays such as the ones we just read, I feel that it is never established enough that there is a percentage of each, not a definitive one or the other. This is why I say they come close, yet still are fundamentally flawed in the concepts of what he personality side of gender truly is.

2.THESIS: “the ugly truth about beauty” – Difference between men and woman when it comes to appearance and how society has stigmatized it.

THESIS: “sex, lies, and conversation” – How men and when perceive how a conversation should happen.

I could relate more to “the ugly truth about beauty” because I felt as though it was too the point. However, this essay seems as to be written primarily based off of opinion and not entirely factual. Such as when Barry talks about the best a man can do is shave and would be lucky to get all the shaving cream out of his hair as if men are incapable. “Sex, lies, and conversation” has a lot of studies done and research to support what the writer is saying. When the writer talks about how they observed and researched the way very young kids behave all the way to the older adults which is a really good target group of people. The tone in Barry’s essay is very lackadaisical and sarcastic whereas in Tannen’s essay there is more of a demanding and confident tone. I enjoyed reading both articles very much in both an enjoyment and informative way. If I had to choose which article I believe is closer to the universal truth is by Barry.
