Discussion 1

Choose ONE of the following questions to answer in the Discussion Board:

  1. Review Figure 1.3, “Individualism as a value in the United States compared to other democracies.” Why do you believe people in America respond so differently to this question than do people in other, Western European, countries?
  2. After reading the text in the box, “The More Things Change, The More They Stay The Same: The Continuing Call to the Federalist Papers” in Chapter 2, do you believe the Federalist Papers are still relevant for understanding the U.S. Constitution?
  3. The Bill of Rights was intended to protect certain fundamental rights for all citizens against actions of the national government. Should the U.S. Constitution provide the same protections for all citizens against actions of state governments, or should it be up to each state whether to protect fundamental rights for citizens within the state?

The Bill of Rights was intended to protect certain fundamental rights for all citizens against actions of the national government. Should the U.S. Constitution provide the same protections for all citizens against actions of state governments, or should it be up to each state whether to protect fundamental rights for citizens within the state?

The U.S Constitution should provide the same protection for all citizens. Every state should be governed accordingly but when it comes to basic human rights it should be one standard across the board. Like the Bill of Rights has the 10 amendments to ensure all of human rights are not defined by the national government the constitution should ensure those same rights. Allowing the states to form their own opinions and laws of the people are opening up doors to discrimination, racism and a lot more, setting us back many years. Having a set of laws that are equal in every way for every person in any state, will put proof behind our slogan”The Land of the Free”

Discussion 2

Choose ONE of the following questions to answer in the Discussion Board:

  1. Review Figure 6.1, “Confidence in Congress.” Why do you believe Congress receives such a low confidence rating?
  2. Do you believe the committee system in Congress is beneficial to the law-making process? Why or why not?
  3. What are your views on members “bringing home the bacon” through pork-barrel legislation? What if the funding is for a project in your hometown?

ANSWER TO Damaris Balarezo

Discussion 2 – Question 3

COLLAPSE

I believe that pork-barrel legislation in a necessary evil in the world of politics. If the federal government makes funds available to each state and district, political representatives should secure those funds for their districts. It’s no secret that politicians sometimes use their influence for their own personal gain, so why not use it to improve the lives of their constituents and/or their hometowns. I think that as long there is a genuine need for the funds and those funds are used appropriately then, in today’s political climate, representatives must do whatever necessary to meet the needs of those they represent. My opinion wouldn’t change if the area in question were my own hometown or one that I’ve never heard of 5,000 miles away.

Choose ONE of the following questions to answer in the Discussion Board:

  1. In Table 7.1, the authors provide a list of the 10 greatest Presidents of all time, according to two separate polls by historians (in 2005 and 2009). What criteria, or methodology, do you feel should be used when making this type of assessment?
  2. Review the text box in Chapter 7, “The More Things Change, The More They Stay The Same: Foreign Policy Successes That Boosted Young President.” Do you believe the President’s foreign policy powers should be dominant and he should have exclusive control over foreign relations, or do you believe Congress should play more of a role in these affairs?
  3. Understanding the manner in which cabinet appointees are selected and the role that they serve, do you believe that they should primarily support and advocate for the policy positions of the President, or do you think that they should have more independence in expressing their opinions and making decisions regarding their department?

Make sure to read what others have written and comment on at least one other student’s response.

answer to

I believe the President should have ultimate power and veto ability because he was elected as a majority winner. I also believe that they should be advocating and coming up with various ideas so the President has a perspective of more than just one person for all of America. Now you also have to think that it is extremely hard for a President to keep up with everything that goes on with the government so personally I think that if the President has faith in the cabinet appointees that they should have more freedom to help him control the government. After all the president did make and suggest his own cabinet.

Choose ONE of the following questions to answer in the Discussion Board:

  1. If politics and legal issues are so often intertwined, should the composition of the Court include seasoned politicians as well as career jurists?
  2. Do you believe a Supreme Court nominee’s political views should play a role in his/her approval by the Senate?
  3. Currently, the Constitution does not contain eligibility requirements for federal judges. Do you believe this is a strength or a weakness? What eligibility requirements would you support, and what affect do you believe this would have on judicial appointments?

Make sure to read what others have written and comment on at least one other student’s response.

answer to

No, I don’t believe that the supreme court views should play a role in the endorsement by Senate because the supreme court is supposed to be basing all cases by the evidence that was presented to the courts. If the judgment was based on a person political views it is a violation of their right.

Choose ONE of the following questions to answer in the Discussion Board:

  1. Have advances in modern technology expanded or contracted citizens’ conceptions of what privacy they actually enjoy? Is it still reasonable to assume that conversations on cell phones remain private? What about e-mail messages and texts? Is anything that you do or write on a social networking site such as Facebook actually private?
  2. Do you think the rights of college students should be equivalent to the rights adults enjoy in the workforce, or should they be equivalent to the more limited rights of high school students?
  3. What disadvantages do modern-day pioneers in battles over equality face? Is the fame they gain for being first worth the price they must pay from their opponents?
  4. Do you agree that a college or university should be able to promote racial diversity through its admissions process? Why or why not?

Question:4

I do agree that college and university should be able to promote racial diversity through the admission process. We live in a very diverse world, colleges and university is where our future leaders and professionals go to attain a higher education. I couldn’t image a university where only one race was allowed to attend. It would have a tremendous impact on our country socially, financially and academically on our higher learning Institutions. University board members and Chancellors have a moral and ethical responsibility to maintain a racial diversity policy for higher learning Institutions. Leaders not abiding by a diversity policy for his/her institutions would only create a social and ethical division in our county. We as Americans are at our best when we come together as country. Learning with people from a variety of backgrounds encourages collaboration and fosters education growth that will benefit all students and society.

Choose ONE of the following questions to answer in the Discussion Board:

  1. Analyze Figure 10.1, “Partisanship in America.” What factors do you believe had led to increase in the number of people who identify as “Independent,” as opposed to Democrat or Republican?
  2. The publication of poll results in the days before an election is often criticized because some say that voters are influenced to vote for the “leader” in the poll—the so-called ‘bandwagon effect’. Do you think that there is any merit to this criticism?
  3. “Revolving door” laws prohibit public officials from lobbying activities for one year after they leave office. What do you view as some potential political pros or cons of public officials making this transition?

Make sure to read what others have written and comment on at least one other student’s response.

answer to

I do believe in the bandwagon effect and it not only affects politics. People usually want to support a winner. I’m from San Antonio so I support the Spurs; the second they make the playoffs I am a diehard fan. You wouldn’t know I didn’t follow them the whole season. The same goes for politics. Some people will not do any research on the candidate or the issues, they will vote for the “leader” merely because they have the majority vote. They assume he must be the better choice since everyone else is voting for him.

  1. Review the results listed in Figure 13.7, “Voter Turnout Around the World.” Why do you believe the U.S. has such a low voter turnout, compared to the other countries listed? Do you believe the U.S. should implement any changes to its system of voting in order to expand turnout?
  2. Should voting be restricted to those with a college education? Why or why not?
  3. Do you think college students’ participation (the youth vote) made a difference in the election outcome in 2012? Do you believe this segment of the population will/can be influential in future elections? Explain.

Should voting be restricted to those with a college education? Why or why not?

I do not believe that voting should be restricted to those with a college education, per se, but voters should be well informed and aware of the important issues surrounding the election. Dautrich (2016) states that “Voting for the sake of voting may not produce good choices” (381). Some citizens invest time in becoming informed voters, and some vote just to wear the little sticker that says “I Voted”. Others have no real interest in voting, and just want to get it out of the way. Although having a college education can’t hurt, it is not absolutely necessary for an individual to cast an informed, meaningful vote. Having the right to vote does not require a college education, so voting should not be restricted. I believe that it would be unfair to the individuals who have been casting meaningful votes for years. It would be great if more voters put the time and energy into learning about the issues prior to voting or deciding not to vote, but they have the right to make these choices.

Discussion 8

COLLAPSE

I believe that progressive taxes, which increase with income, are unfair because they continue to increase as the income amounts increases. So, if a person is working 40 hours a week and barely making ends meet, receiving a pay raise would not be very effective, because the person will be paying higher taxes. Regressive taxes are also unfair, because they charge each individual the same amount, regardless of income. So those earning a significantly low income are paying high taxes, while wealthier people are not effected as much. Flat taxes seem fair because, as Dautrich and Yalof (2016) state, the tax burden would be “spread more evenly…[and] Americans would not be penalized for working harder to earn more” (438). With flat taxes, money is coming from all entities at the same proportion; thus, the rich pay more taxes than the poor, but the percentage of taxes they both are charged is equal.
