Part I Short Answer:

1. In no more than 5 sentences, explain the differences between “qualitative” and “quantitative’ research methods.

The difference between quantitative and qualitative data is qualitative research methods usually yield data that is nonnumeric, and quantitative methods provide numeric data. But qualitative research methods usually are more detailed, in depth, and richer in meaning, with more flexibility. Quantitative research methods involve the quantification of observations often in a highly controlled context.

2. Give 2 examples of the types of quantitative research methods.

Two examples of quantitative research methods can be quasi-experimental research and experimental research.

3. In no more than 5 sentences, explain the differences between “operationalization” and “conceptualization.”

Conceptualization is the process of clarifying your meaning. This is where you would define all the relevant terms, and explain what they mean in the context of your research. Operationalization is the process of being specific on the exact procedures for measuring, after you define or conceptualize.

4. Give an example of “operationalization.”

An example of operationalization from the textbook is using scientific method to evaluate a person’s level of prejudice.

5. Give an example of “conceptualization.”

One rather famous example of someone defining and specifying meaning is Elwin Powell’s 1958 conceptualization of anomia or anomie. Powell states that anomia is “When the end of action become contradictory, inaccessible, or insignificant”, the then explains that it is also followed by an overall feeling of emptiness, and apathy, and sense of meaningless and loss of

orientation.

6. What are the benefits of “quantitative methods?”

One of the best benefits to quantitative methods, is a quantitative method can provide more explicit result that researchers can directly preserve the data.

7. What are the benefits of “qualitative methods?”

One major benefit of qualitative methods is the depth of understanding that it has. But it is fairly flexible, and can be more cost effective than quantitative methods. Therefore qualitative methods are found to generally have more validity.

8. What are the benefits of “mixed methods?”

The main benefit of mixed methods is an overall clear understanding and the results within the research. It adds a fertility to the data, especially if it is a mixture of quantitative and qualitative methods.

9. What is the “sociological imagination?”

Sociological imagination is a tool coined by C. Wright Mills for critical thinking, that helps us see the world sociologically and understand how things are connected and intersected.

10. Please provide the three components that make up the “sociological imagination.”Please explain each component. Please provide one example for each component.

The first component is to be able to see the intersection of history and ones biography, or individual experience. One example we talked about in class is how one’s structural position influences their life history, such as how Trump’s mother is a refugee, and how that might have impacted Trump.

The second component of sociological imagination is to be able to understand the interconnections between individuals and society. One example of this I experienced first hand in my research project, as we were attempting to get individuals to conform to “society” through the a social force.

The final component is to be able to distinguish between personal troubles and social issues. One example from class is how with these school shootings at school, how much of this violence is a result of personal troubles such as mental illness or social issues such as abuse.

3. Which of the following can BEST be defined as a type of research that is used to answer a specific question that has direct applications to the world?

4. Three students are conducting separate studies. John is interested in whether a psychological study on the impact of sleep on labor productivity is correct. Violet is interested in finding out why people function best when sleeping 8 hours a day. Stephen is going to use statistics to attempt to resolve an issue in proving his hypothesis.
