Evaluation of an Ethical Theory in Clinical Ethics

Evaluation of an Ethical Theory in Clinical Ethics

Overview

You have read about ethical theories and perspectives and analyzed a clinical ethics case study via your discussion for this unit. Now, you will evaluate the ethical theory you used in the Unit 3 discussion as a framework for analysis.

This exercise—judging how well an ethical theory functions in a particular context, and from which perspectives—will push you further on your path to formulating your own bioethical manifesto. In addition, you will draw on this and the previous two assignments (from Units 1 and 2) to complete your course project. From this paper, the Evaluation of an Ethical Approach in Clinical Ethics, you will develop an argument for or against the approach you used to analyze the case study in your discussion.

Assignment Instructions

Recall the ethical theory you used to analyze the clinical ethics case study in the Unit 3 discussion. Evaluate the theory of ethical reasoning used in your case study, in terms of particular perspectives related to clinical ethics.

  • Consider the ethical perspectives relevant to the clinical issue in your case study. Assess whether the theory provides satisfactory answers to the issue from the relevant perspectives.
  • Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the approach you used in the case study, in terms of internal coherency and practical use.
  • Defend the conclusion you reached in the case study by answering counterarguments.

At least two scholarly resources from the Capella library are required as support of your statements. Note that textbooks, dictionaries, encyclopedias, and most Internet materials are not considered scholarly resources. Use the “What Is Scholarly?” library resource (linked in the Resources) to help you find scholarly materials.

Your assignment will be scored according to the criteria outlined in the Evaluation of an Ethical Theory in Clinical Ethics Scoring Guide. Refer to the scoring guide often as you develop your assignment, to be sure you are addressing the essential criteria.
