English essay

The next essay to be graded in this class is due by midnight Friday, May 18. Any essay turned in afterwards will be counted as late and marked down unless prior notice is given. The essay should be a well-organized, well-supported analysis, around 6-8 pages, typed, and double-spaced. It should include a title and proper MLA in-text citation. DO NOT USE ANY OUTSIDE SOURCE FOR THIS ESSAY. As a result, no MLA work citation page is necessary.

The assignment is based on Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot. The introduction of your paper should briefly summarize the landmark play, mentioning the characters and key moments of the plot (yeah, good luck with that!), and then explain what makes the novel a work of postmodernism, as opposed to classicism and maybe even modernism. Please quote and cite a passage from the play to support your argument.

As a thesis, deconstruct the play under the following terms:

First, critique the play’s characters in terms of existentialism: The body parts should be about whether a character controls their life through free will or fate: do the characters have the choices to live to their potential? Or are they fated to a certain end, without any chance to change their outcome? Again, focus on two or three characters and quote and cite passages as support.

Then, analyze the play in terms of Marxism. Again the body parts of your essay should be a critique of the bourgeois/Master and the proletariat/working class: how does power dictate actions and control over the characters? How are the characters “trapped” in their position? Focus on two or three passages that illustrate your points; do not rely on a summary to prove your argument.

In your conclusion, present the value of the play today in terms of what it is saying about drama and theater and the postmodern condition. Why does it resonate with persons placed in dire situations, such as after Hurricane Katrina or in the San Quentin Prison? How can it relate to the average person, like yourself, living in a postmodern world?

I have provided a very rough lesson after this one to answer an concerns you might have. If you still have any questions or wish to show me a draft of your paper, feel free to contact me during office hours or via email to schedule an appointment.

Good luck!
