Final Tips
Who wrote it: Elizabeth Royte
Why was it written: To raise the point that one third of food is wasted
What is it doing for its readers: Making them aware of how and where food wastage occurs in its many forms. The article also asks readers to combat this wastage issueWhat is it: An online news post
Where does it appear: National Geographic News (https://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2014/10/141013-food-waste-national-security-environment-science-ngfood/) When was it published: October 13, 2014
The text speaks about food wastage and that 30% of food grown does not get used in any sense.
The main points are the ways in which food is wasted or lost (and the difference: waste occurs at the end of the food chain with consumer levels and loss is at the front of the food chain i.e. the farmers during and after production), the impact that food wastage and loss has on labor costs, land and water as well as the greenhouse effect due to higher greenhouse gas emissions.
What I found most interesting was people found it easy to throw something away just because it was cosmetically imperfect or past its use-by date even when it has not gone off in an obvious way and has been refrigerated well. Another point I found interesting was that due to lack of storage, so much food goes to waste.
