Surprising Frankenstein
We are very familiar with Frankenstein’s monster from popular culture portrayals, but most people who read the book for the first time are quite surprised by the way Shelley portrays him. Instead of the green, square-headed, grunting, stumbling monster we’re used to, Shelley’s creature is articulate, athletic and capable of great psychological complexity. Why do you think we changed Shelley’s original monster so much? What fears or anxieties does Shelley’s monster express? What fears or anxieties does our popular version express? Why the difference? (Please write an initial post of roughly 100 words, and respond to another student’s post with roughly 50 words.)
I will post other student’s work later for response.
