creative writing: Developing Character & Conflict through the use of Setting

Choose one option and write an approximately 900-1300 word story. Give your story a title.

***

Option #1: Create two characters that are opposing forces. One will take the shape of something or someone evil. It should represent the bad that exists in the world. The opposing character does not necessarily need to be good, but must oppose the evil character. These characters’ qualities of good and evil must relate in some way to the setting. The setting takes shape within these characters. Consider stories like “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been” and “The Most Dangerous Game.” Please feature at least TWO character and no more than four characters. (Too many characters in such a short story can confuse the reader—start small, you can expand and build on this draft later.) No need to produce a finished story; when you reach the word count, if you haven’t quite finished, please write To Be Continued.

Option #2: In this scenario, you will also need to develop two characters who oppose one another. But this opposition and conflict must directly result from the setting. The characteristics of the characters do not need to relate to the setting, specifically, but the opposition between these two characters would not have existed in any other setting. Think about stories like The Hunger Games or The Maze Runner. Please feature at least TWO character and no more than four characters. (Too many characters in such a short story can confuse the reader—start small, you can expand and build on this draft later.) No need to produce a finished story; when you reach the word count, if you haven’t quite finished, please write To Be Continued.
