The complexity of child abuse dashes any hopes for a simple solution (Kelly, 2011). Because maltreatment is more apt to occur when several contributing factors are present, eradicating child maltreatment requires many approaches. As one approach, American attitudes toward “acceptable” levels of punishment and poverty would have to change. American children will be abused as long as physical punishment is considered acceptable and effective and as long as poverty-stricken families live in chronic stress from simply trying to provide food and shelter. Parents also need counseling and training in parenting skills. Abuse will continue as long as parents remain ignorant of effective methods of parenting and discipline. It would be naive to expect these changes to occur overnight. However, by focusing on some manageable factors, the risk of maltreatment can be reduced. Social supports help. When parents know they can turn to helpful adults for advice and reassurance, they better manage the stresses of childrearing that might otherwise lead to abuse. Families can also be taught more effective ways of coping with situations that might otherwise trigger abuse (Wicks-Nelson & Israel, 2006). Through role-playing sessions, parents can learn the benefits of authoritative parenting and effective ways of using feedback and modeling to regulate children’s behavior.Providing social supports and teaching effective parenting are typically done when maltreatment and abuse have already occurred. Preventing maltreatment is more desirable and more cost effective. For prevention, one useful tool is familiar: early childhood intervention programs. Maltreatment and abuse can be cut in half when families participate for 2 or more years in intervention programs that include preschool education along with family support activities aimed at encouraging parents to become more involved in their children’s education (Reynolds & Robertson, 2003). When parents participate in these programs, they become more committed to their children’s education. This leads their children to be more successful in school, reducing a source of stress and enhancing parents’ confidence in their childrearing skills, thereby reducing the risks of maltreatmentAnother successful approach focuses specifically on parenting skills in families where children are at risk for maltreatment. In one program (Bugental & Schwartz, 2009), mothers of infants at risk for abuse participated in a training program in which they learned to identify likely causes of recurring problems encountered while caring for their babies (e.g., problems associated with feeding, sleeping, crying). Then they were given help in devising methods to deal with those problems and in monitoring the effectiveness of the methods. When mothers participated in the program, they were less likely to use harsh punishment (a known risk factor for child maltreatment), and their children were less likely to suffer injuries at home (a common measure of parental neglect). There are also effective programs targeting parents of older children who are at risk for maltreatment. One program, parent–child interaction therapy, focuses on helping parents (1) build warm and positive relationships with their children, (2) develop reasonable expectations for their children, and (3) use more effective disciplinary practices. When parents of at-risk children participate in this program, they report less stress, their behavior with their children becomes more positive (more praise and fewer commands), and critically, suspected abuse is reduced (Thomas & Zimmer-Gimbeck, 2011).1. Discuss the relationship between parental use of corporal (physical) discipline and child abuse. Do you think that physical punishment (e.g., spanking) can be done in a responsible and healthy way? Why or why not?2. Under what circumstances is early intervention with parents and children found to reduce later incidence of child maltreatment and abuse?3. While quite a bit of research has focused on preventing abuse of younger children, it is also important to remember that abuse can also involve older kids. Based on the research of Thomas & Zimmer-Gimbeck (2011), what interventions can reduce such abuse?

In this assignment, you will create the thesis statement for your Final Assignment. The thesis is the statement of your perspectives on the literature. It should also include the rationale and relevant empirical and theoretical background supporting your perspectives. The primary objective of this assignment is to outline specific areas of inquiry you intend to answer in the course of the Integrative Literature Review. Although they may change during the course of the review, articulating these areas of inquiry early will help provide focus and direction for your research.  Begin by introducing the areas of inquiry to be included in your Integrative Literature Review. Explain your perspective on the literature and include how you arrived at this viewpoint, how the literature you have chosen to include supports this viewpoint, and why this perspective is relevant to the field of psychology.  Based on your introduction, briefly discuss the literature you have chosen by integrating concepts developed from your four different content domains. Be sure to utilize at least one peer-reviewed source per domain. Construct clear and concise arguments using evidence-based psychological concepts and theories to support your perspectives regarding the literature.   To conclude your assignment, identify any overarching implications shown in the studies and describe how these influenced your perspectives on the literature.  The Integrative Literature Review: Thesis Statement •Must be two to three double-spaced pages in length (not including title and reference pages) and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. •Must include a separate title page with the following: ?Title of paper ?Student’s name ?Course name and number ?Instructor’s name ?Date submitted •Must begin with an introductory paragraph that has a succinct thesis statement. •Must address the topic of the paper with critical thought. •Must end with a conclusion that reaffirms your thesis. •Must use at least four peer-reviewed sources (one source per domain). •Must document all sources in APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. •Must include a separate reference list that is formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. This is the final paper information just in case you need it:Integrative Literature ReviewPathbuilder is being used for this assignment. Please be certain to complete the “Survey Acknowledgement Quiz” this week in order to submit the Integrative Literature Review. You will not be allowed to submit your Final Paper until you have completed the quiz this week.  The primary goal of this literature review is to integrate concepts from four different content domains within the larger field of psychology. The four content domains should be chosen from previous coursework in this program. In this paper, students will review the findings in the individual empirical articles, organize the research in a meaningful way, evaluate the reliability, validity, and generalizability of the research findings, and present an integrated synthesis of the research that sheds new light on the topics within and across the four domains.  The result of a successful integrative literature review may be a significant contribution to a particular body of knowledge and, consequently, to research and practice. Therefore, before writing this literature review, substantive new research must be conducted via the Internet and within the Ashford University Library for each of the four chosen domains. A minimum of six sources must be included for each of the four domains. Although content from literature reviews completed in prior courses within this program may be included, it may not constitute the total research for the individual domains addressed within this assignment. No more than four sources from previous literature reviews completed in this program may be utilized for this integrative review.  The headings listed below must be used within the paper to delineate the sections of content. These sections include the following: a clear introduction that provides a general review and organizes the research in a meaningful way; a discussion in which the evidence is presented through analysis, critique, and synthesis; and a conclusion in which the discussion is drawn together in a meaningful way, the claims of the introduction are brought to a logical closure, and new research is proposed.  Introduction •Provide a conceptual framework for the review. •Describe how the review will be organized. The questions below may be used to guide this section. ?What are the guiding theories within the domains? ?How are the domains connected? ?Are there competing points of view across the domains? ?Why is the integration of these domains important? ?What is the history of these domains? ?What are the related theories or findings? •Describe how the literature was identified, analyzed, and synthesized. •How and why was the literature chosen? •What is your claim or thesis statement?  Discussion •Provide the analysis, critique, and synthesis for the review.  Analysis •Examine the main ideas and relationships presented in the literature across the four domains. •Integrate concepts from the four different content domains within the larger field of psychology. •What claim(s) can be made in the introduction? •What evidence supports the claim(s) made in the introduction?  Critique  •Evaluate the reliability, validity, and generalizability of the chosen research findings. •How well does the literature represent the issues across the four domains? •Identify the strengths and the key contributions of the literature. •What, if any, deficiencies exist within the literature? •Have the authors omitted any key points and/or arguments? •What, if any, inaccuracies have been identified in the literature? •What evidence runs contrary to the claims proposed in the introduction, and how might these be reconciled with the claims presented? •Explain how the APA’s Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct might influence the reliability and/or generalizability of the chosen findings. •Did the ethical issues influence the outcomes of the research? •Were ethical considerations different across the domains?  Synthesis •Integrate existing ideas with new ideas to create new knowledge and new perspectives. •Describe the research that has previously been done across these domains, as well as any controversies or alternate opinions that currently exist. •Relate the evidence presented to the major conclusions being made. •Construct clear and concise arguments using evidence-based psychological concepts and theories to posit new relationships and perspectives on the topics within the domains.  Conclusion •Provide a conclusion and present potential future considerations. •State your final conclusion(s). •Synthesize the findings described in the discussion into a succinct summary. •What questions remain? •What are the possible implications of your argument for existing theories and for everyday life? •Are there novel theories and/or testable hypothesizes for future research? •What do the overarching implications of the studies show? •Where should the research go from this point to further the understanding of these domains and the greater study of psychology?

Retrieved from http://www.unicef.org/ceecis/Toolkit_of_Recommended_Curricula_and_Assessments_for_Home_Visiting.pdfCASE STUDY AND DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:Please use this case study to address the Discussion topic.Koi is a 5-year-old boy in the childcare center where you work. You are preparing for the annual family conferences in your school. You have compiled a portfolio of Koi’s progress throughout the year and also have standardized test results from a screening done on all children in your center. Koi is developing typically, and has met all of the developmental milestones as indicated by the Developmental Indicators for the Assessment of Learning (DIAL-4), the standardized screening assessment given at your school. You have prepared a portfolio complete with many work sample artifacts demonstrating his progress throughout the year. The only area of concern noted by the early childhood professionals in Koi’s classroom is off-task behavior during circle time. It takes three or four requests to get Koi to join circle time each day. He will only sit for approximately 10 minutes and then he attempts to leave the circle. After studying this behavior, the early childhood professionals were able to determine that by adding additional visuals and opportunities for movement, Koi would attend and participate in circle time for the entire lesson.Koi has been staying and participating in circle time consistently for the past two weeks since this implemented change. You want to share all of this assessment information with Koi’s parents, and the following questions are good ways to start thinking about how to best communicate with families. Please describe how you would share these assessment results with Koi’s family by answering the following questions:1.          What strategies can you use to ensure that parents/caregivers feel welcome and comfortable at the beginning of the conference?2.          What strategies can you use when sharing assessment information with the parents/caregivers? Why did you choose these strategies?3.          What method can you use to summarize the student’s progress?4.          What role do the parents/caregivers have in the conference?5.          How could you share results that may be perceived by the parents/caregivers as negative?Student 1’s post:1.          What strategies can you use to ensure that parents/caregivers feel welcome and comfortable at the beginning of the conference? I would start by setting up the meeting and reassuring the parents that this is just a meeting to discuss the assessment and to get their ideas on certain strategies that you are going to suggest them. Let them know that in no way is their child going to be labeled or is this information going to be shared with anyone other than them or yourself. That you have found some issues that need to be addressed and that you are there to support them in any decision that is made.2.          What strategies can you use when sharing assessment information with the parents/caregivers? The first thing that I am going to do is get copies of everything and have them ready to give to the parents so that they know exactly where he was at the beginning of the school year and where he is now. Then I would provide them with any resources information that would be of help. I would keep everything as positive as possible because then the parents would be comfortable and open with the information that we are sharing together. Why did you choose these strategies? The reason I chose this strategy is because parents are sometimes in denial and feel like they are being judged and that is the last thing that I would want them to feel. I want them comfortable enough to where they open on their concerns and that they could understand the information that I am providing. I would explain that with Koi, we try and refocus the child’s attention on the task at hand and that eventually the refocus will not be needed because it will be second nature.3.          What method can you use to summarize the student’s progress? Basically, I would have all the scores and graphs that show where he was compared to other children in his class at the beginning of the year and where he is now. This would allow me to show them that they are not the only parents with a child that needs additional services or help in school. I would then have a game plan of where we need to provide additional assistance with Koi and how we can help the parents with open communication and specific strategies at home that would be the same as if the child was in the classroom. I would offer parent training that would help them adjust at home that would benefit the child both at school and home. I would allow them to take the copy of the portfolio and notes with them so that later they can review them. I would also give them my email address so that if they have any concerns after the meeting that they can reach me immediately because my email is available through my phone.4.          What role do the parents/caregivers have in the conference? Parents and caregivers are the advocates for the child because they spend more time with the child everyday then I would. The parents and caregivers are the child’s voice because they clearly know the child better than anyone.5.          How could you share results that may be perceived by the parents/caregivers as negative? I would focus on the positives first and then bring up the negatives and allow the parents to ask questions and give their input and be open to what they were saying. I would let them know that we can make any necessary adjustments to our plan at any time if they feel that the plan is not working.Student 2’s post:1. What strategies can you use to ensure that parents/caregivers feel welcome and comfortable at the beginning of the conference?Parent-teacher conferences are mostly done face-to-face. Before the conference with Koi parents, I may set out some refreshment. I would place Koi’s work in a folder on the table where the conference will take place. I may decide to have ready a slide-show of whatKoi does at school.  If necessary, I may have an interpreter available. I would greet the parent and allow them to talk first. Koi’s parentswill be given an opportunity to share information about their family. I would answer any concern Koi’s parents may have about Koi’s progress. I would be tactful and honest (p. 276-278).2. What strategies can you use when sharing assessment information with the parents/caregivers? Why did you choose these strategies?I would be sure to cover each part of the assessment with the parents. I would be careful with the way I communicate the informationto the parents. I would think about what I am going to say before I say it. I would highlight all of the strength of the child before presenting his weaknesses. I would explain what Koi test scores mean. I would make sure the information from the assessment is accurate.3. What method can you use to summarize the student’s progress?I would use Koi’s portfolio during the conference. I would show the work samples I had collected to show beginning to the presencedate.4. What role do the parents/caregivers have in the conference? It is the role of parents/caregivers to share information about their child. For example, they could share the child’s personality traits, challenges, habits, friends, hobbies, and talents. Parents should try to stay focused on their child and his or her unique temperament, individual needs, and special interests. It is their role to listen with an open-mind to what the teacher has to say about their child. Be considerate to the teacher and the other parents who has schedule conference that day. Arrive on time for the conference.5. How could you share results that may be perceived by the parents/caregivers as negative?I would have to make sure the results are accurate. I would talk to my supervisor before during a conference with this particular parents.I would relate the information professionally and honest.ReferenceParent Teacher Conference.
