Application: Analyzing the Case of “Gwen”

In the Learning Resources for this week, you saw—as you did with more general definitions of normal and abnormal behavior—that it is difficult to define abnormality where sexuality is concerned. As a therapist, sexual issues and behaviors might be difficult for you to address due to your own socialization into a particular sex and gender role. How you react to the presenting information will likely affect the therapeutic relationship that is established. Is it then enough to know about the diagnostic categories when considering presenting issues? In what way might you hinder or improve the outcome by your own reactions to the presenting information?

  • Focus on the case of “Gwen” in this week’s media learning resources.

  • Reflect on how your own biases might hamper or improve the outcome of your client’s gender issues or sexual disorders.

  • Briefly summarize the case.
  • Construct a diagnosis for Gwen and provide specific supporting information for the diagnosis given. If you do not feel that the client meets the criteria for a DSM diagnosis, explain your position.
  • Explain family and social issues that should be addressed and why, and briefly describe any additional information that might be significant to the diagnosis, assessment, and counseling of this individual.
  • Briefly describe any difficulties you might have in assessing or diagnosing this individual, and any background issues or biases you might have that would contribute to making this a challenging case to assess, diagnose, or provide counseling.
