When it comes to vulnerable population we can, as health care professionals, understand that they will always be affected negatively when it comes to accessing health and social services. When it come to the homeless population it is always known that they suffer from poor health and minimally access. Free clinics and social programs exist in most cities with high homeless populations. Something new that I did learn was that non-hispanic white Americans are make up more of the homeless population. This is surprising because often other races or ethnicity are often over emphasized in the homeless population. Another thing that I learned is that the LGBTQ community faces discrimination in health or could sometimes not have access to certain medical programs.

The first thing I learned was that the elderly population is likely to double over the next sixty-five years.  While I knew that the elderly population was increasing rapidly currently, due to the baby-boomer generation, I had not realized it was projected to continue that climb so drastically.  This leads to consideration for helping care for the elderly both health wise and financially speaking.  Will the demand for elderly care nurses continue to increase, and how will we meet that demand?  The second thing I learned was that mental illness affects 1 in 5 people at some point in their lives.  While the definition of mental illness is vast, and may not correlate with many of our common and misguided notions as to what qualifies as someone with mental illness, this is still a very large number.  For something that affects such a large amount of people I still feel that it is mostly left misunderstood and undertreated.  Understanding and acceptance of those with mental health issues has made great steps in the recent decades but there is still a vast need to focus additional resources on this side of the health care industry.
