For this essay, try out critical thinking skills in the realm of aesthetic judgments. The creation and enjoyment of artworks is an important part of human existence. A few other animals make and use primitive tools, but we seem to be the only ones who make objects that have no practical use yet feature so significantly in our lives. Learning how to think critically about art helps us discuss it more effectively, and may enhance our shared experience of art with others.
Using a very broad sense of “art,” consider a recently encountered work of art that had an impact on you. It doesn’t have to be an object in a museum; in fact, a movie is a perfectly good example, especially if it is one that you felt went beyond entertainment or a light diversion.
Do you think that the principle or principles you have used facilitate critical discussion about art?
That is, can it or they be useful in coming to agreement—or a richer disagreement—with friends and family about what is or is not aesthetically good?
