The Wisdom Walk story that teaches us about Judaism is the “Make Time for the Sabbath” story. This story is about Professor Bennet and her experiences growing up in the East Coast going to her grandparents house every Friday for Sabbath. After reading the Wisdom Walk, being a Jewish boy and growing up with Sabbath, I still learned a lot about Judaism that I did not know before. Sabbath is meant for getting together with your family at the end of each week and cherishing and thanking god for a wonderful week and for all the blessings he’s done for you. It’s a time to rest and rejuvenate during the weekends so we can head back into work or school on Monday 100% re-energized, and refreshed. Baking challah and cleaning up the house for Sabbath dinner is supposed to become a habit, something you do without even planning, kind of like going to sleep and eating breakfast. Every Jewish person should celebrate Sabbath not because it’s good to and because God is always watching you but because it’s the best way to have family dinner and prepare for the next working week.

Growing up as a Jewish boy in Los Angeles I went to a fair share of Sabbath dinners. Growing up I compared Sabbath dinners kind of like going to Church for a catholic on a Sunday. I hated it and did not see the point in Sabbath dinners. Growing up and maturing a bit I realized that Sabbath wasn’t all about the prayers and showing off “how Jewish” you are to god. Sabbath is about getting with your friends and family, thanking god for a wonderful week and a wonderful dinner with all your friends and family. Catching up with them on how their weeks were and talking about the next week! It’s about resting and rejuvenating so you have the energy and motivation to succeed every week and look forward to the next Sabbath dinner. It doesn’t have to be all about prayers and God, Sabbath is meant to spend time with friends and family and rest for the next week.

The story, “A Night of Candlelight” from Wisdom Walk, speaks about a pregnant mother named Liticia, who decided to light candles around her house on Shabbat opposed to automatically turning on her television and engaging in activities that set us apart from one another. Opposed to encountering in busy work, Liticia decided to meditate and focus on herself surrounded by the candles she lit. Her Shabbat continued when her son arrived home from his fathers house, as she is divorced, and opposed to having him watch television or play online games, Liticia decided for them to play board games together in order to spend time with one another. Her son, Keith, was hesitant with the idea, as he was so use to watching television and playing online games during this time. Claimed in Wisdom Walk, “Before long, they laughed and talked through the afternoon. Liticia said it was one of the closest times she and her son had enjoyed together in a long time” (119). Liticia’s son also stated how he had a great time, and if they can continue engaging in games together and spending time with one another the following Shabbat. It is vital for one to spend time with one another and enjoy each others presence in the moment by taking a rest from activities, refraining from work, and stress on Shabbat. According to Wisdom Walk, “We return to ourselves, friends, and family, and have time to appreciate the blessings of our lives” (120). Taking time off busy work and activities in order to spend time with family is a major component of Shabbat, as it is the holy day of rest, and reminds us of the importance of spending time away from busy work and spending it with family instead.

Personally, I enjoyed reading this story. My views are positive and that it reminded me of the importance of Shabbat, and how this holy day brings families and loved ones closer together. Resting is vital, and taking time off work in order to enjoy each others presence is always important. Sabbath reminds us that we must take a day off in order to rest for ourselves and engage in spending time with each other. After reading about Liticia’s experience, it reminded me how important it is to spend time and surround one another with family, and how vital it is to take off time from work in order to relax and rest on the holy day of Shabbat. Liticia’s story relates to my life because growing up as a child, I would automatically run to my computer similar to Keith in order to engage in online games. I would never spend time with my family because I was so busy and distracted with video games, online computer games, and doing homework. I never rested on Shabbat or surrounded myself with my family on the holy day. My parents decided it was time I changed my habits, and engage in spending time with my three brothers and them. My mom, dad, and three brothers and I, sat at the dinner table after my mom and I lit the candles, and it was our first time spending shabbat together as a family. Opposed to my three brothers and I being distracted by technology, and my parents watching television, we decided to all sit and actually talk to and communicate with one another. It was a great experience, and now every Friday night since that day, my family and I decide to rest and spend time with one another on Shabbat, as well as engaging in a traditional Friday night dinner (which is also a major component of Shabbat). Shabbat brought my family and I closer together, and we continue to have Shabbat on Friday nights in order to enjoy each others presence, take time off busy work, connect with G-d, and appreciate our blessings.
